LG Washer Drain Pump Replacement — OE Error and Standing Water
The drain pump in an LG washer uses the same 4681EA2001T motor assembly as LG dishwashers — a standardized part that is widely available and affordable. When the pump fails, the washer cannot drain and displays the OE error code. Standing water remains in the drum after the cycle ends.
LG Washer Coin Trap — Check This First
LG front-load washers have a debris filter (coin trap) accessible from a small door on the front lower panel. Before replacing the pump, clean this filter. Coins, hair pins, buttons, and small items caught in the filter restrict drain flow and can jam the pump impeller.
To access: open the small access door on the lower front panel. Place a towel and shallow pan underneath. Slowly unscrew the drain plug — water will flow out. Once drained, unscrew the filter cap completely and pull it out. Remove all debris, clean the filter, and reinstall.
This 10-minute maintenance task resolves 50%+ of LG washer OE errors without any parts replacement.

When It Is Actually the Pump
- Coin trap is clean but OE error persists — pump motor has failed
- Pump buzzes but water does not drain — impeller is jammed or motor shaft is stripped
- No sound at all during the drain phase — pump motor is dead (no power or windings burned)
- Pump runs but water drains very slowly — impeller blades are broken, reducing pumping force

Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for rear panel access (front-load) or cabinet screws (top-load)
- Channel-lock pliers — for spring clamps on drain hoses
- Towels — significant water spillage when disconnecting pump
- Multimeter (optional) — for testing pump motor windings
Front-Load Washer Pump Replacement
Disconnect power and water. Tilt the washer back against the wall (rest it on the rear panel) to access the bottom. The pump is mounted at the bottom of the tub sump.
Alternatively, access from the front by removing the lower front panel and working through the opening. Disconnect the electrical connector, release the spring clamps on the inlet and outlet hoses, remove the mounting screws, and pull the pump out.
Install the new pump, reconnect hoses and clamps, plug in the connector. Run a Rinse & Spin cycle to test.

Top-Load Washer Pump Replacement
The pump is accessed from behind or below the cabinet. Remove the rear panel or tilt the machine back. The pump mounts on the base near the drain hose outlet.
Impeller Inspection
Before installing the new pump, remove the old pump and check the impeller. If debris (coins, underwire, bobby pins) caused the failure, ensure no debris remains in the sump area. Debris left behind will damage the new pump immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG washer shows OE error. Do I need a new pump?
Clean the coin trap/debris filter first — this resolves over half of OE errors. If the filter is clean and the drain hose is not kinked, test the pump motor.
Why does the LG washer use the same pump as the dishwasher?
LG standardizes the 4681EA2001T across washers and dishwashers to reduce manufacturing costs. Same motor, same impeller — only the mounting orientation differs. Widely available and affordable as a result.
How do I drain a full LG washer that will not pump out?
Use the emergency drain on the front lower panel. Open the access door, place a pan underneath, and slowly open the drain plug. Water gravity-drains through the filter housing. Expect 2-5 gallons depending on load size.
