The short answer
On an LG refrigerator, the first thing to check is a water filter overdue for replacement. An ice maker that has stopped is usually being starved of water or held above its make temperature rather than broken. LG refrigerators run an inverter-driven compressor and board-managed fans, so the unit modulates rather than cycling on and off - and a fault often presents as a cabinet that is merely warm rather than one that is clearly dead. Check the supply and the freezer temperature before anyone quotes for an ice-maker assembly.
What you observe
- The bin stays empty and the maker never cycles — No cycling at all points at supply, temperature or the arm rather than at the mechanism.
- The maker cycles but drops little or nothing — That is a fill problem: the mould is getting less water than a cube needs.
- Cubes are hollow, small or fused into a block — Partial fill and slow freezing both show up in the shape of the cube before they show up in the count.
- NEAR MISS - ice is made but tastes or smells wrong — That is a filter and storage question rather than a production fault, and no ice-maker part fixes it.
Causes, most likely first on LG
- A water filter overdue for replacement — As the filter loads, flow falls. Ranked first because it is scheduled maintenance that throttles ice production long before it stops the water. On LG, the inverter compressor and the board-managed fans modulate rather than cycling, so a control or fan fault shows up as a cabinet that is merely warm.
- A freezer that is not cold enough to make ice — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below, and an ice maker needs that range to complete a cycle. Ranked second because the maker will not harvest until the mould reaches its cut-out, so a warm freezer stops it silently.
- A bail arm or sensor that thinks the bin is full — A wire bail lifted by a bag of food, or an optical sensor obscured by frost, tells the control the bin is full. Ranked third because it stops production completely while the whole machine tests perfectly, and it costs nothing to check.
Check in this order, and why
- Note when the filter was last changed — Anything beyond the manufacturer interval makes the filter your first suspect. It comes first because the ranking above puts a water filter overdue for replacement ahead of everything else on this platform.
- Check the freezer temperature with a thermometer in a glass of water — It tells you whether the freezer is capable of making ice before you look at the maker at all.
- Look at the bail arm or the sensor windows in the bin — The arm must hang free, and the sensor windows must be clear and dry.
What an owner can safely check
- Replace the water filter and flush the line — Fit a new filter, then dispense several litres to purge trapped air before judging whether production recovers.
Tools: replacement filterAbout 15 min
- Verify the freezer temperature and clear the vents — Leave a thermometer in the freezer for a few hours, and clear any packaging blocking the vents around the ice maker.
Tools: thermometerAbout 30 min
- STOP HERE if the next check needs a meter on live terminals — Everything past this point is measured with power applied, and that is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.

Safety
Switch the unit off at the breaker before pulling it out or reaching behind it - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Turn the water supply off before disturbing any line connection, and never thaw a frozen fill tube with an open flame or a heat gun: warm water and patience do the same job without melting the liner.
When to call a technician
Call once the supply, the filter, the freezer temperature and the bail arm are all proven good and no ice is being produced, because the next checks are on the valve and the module with power applied. Call sooner if you find water under or behind the unit, since a leaking line is the more urgent problem.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the LG refrigerator as a class, not one family or one model line. What changes from build to build - wiring colours, part numbers and component test values - is deliberately absent. Where your model plate names a line, use that line's documentation first.
