Write the code down before anything is reset
The code is the only evidence the machine will offer, and a power cycle erases it. Note it exactly, note what the machine was doing when it appeared, and only then try a reset. A code that returns at the same point in the cycle is a real measurement; one that never returns was probably a single disturbed reading.

- A code appears and the cycle stops part way through — The machine reached a measurement it could not accept, which is the normal shape of this fault.
- The same code returns at the same point every time — Repeatability is the strongest evidence available, and it means a real condition rather than a glitch.
- The display lights but no cycle will start — A refusal before any measurement is taken, which points at the start circuit rather than at sensing.
- The drum turns but the load comes out damp and the cycle ends early — Sensing that reads the load as dry when it is not, and it often precedes a code.
- A code cleared by a reset and did not come back — A disturbed reading rather than a fault, and it is worth noting rather than chasing.
- NEAR MISS: the machine runs correctly but the display is dim or patchy — That is a display fault and not a control fault, and the machine is doing its job.

- A real condition the machine measured correctly — First, and it is the one people skip. Restricted exhaust, a load that will not dry, an overheating duct: the machine is right and the code is the messenger.
- Moisture sensing reading wrongly — Second. A film of fabric softener on the sensor bars makes a wet load read dry, which produces short cycles and eventually a code.
- A connection between a sensor and the board — Third. A connector that has worked loose gives an implausible reading, which the control reports as a fault.
- The control board itself — Last, and it is genuinely last. Boards fail, but far less often than the three conditions above, and replacing one first is the classic expensive mistake.

- Record the code and the point in the cycle where it appears — It is free, it cannot be recovered later, and it shapes everything after it.

- Wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum — It addresses the second cause in a minute with a cloth.
- Only then treat the board as a suspect — It is the most expensive part on the machine and the least likely cause, so it goes last.

Never run the machine with a panel removed. Leave the door switch wired exactly as the factory fitted it, and never restart a machine that has smelled hot or scorched.
When to call
Call once the duct and the sensor bars are clean and the code still returns at the same point, because everything after that is behind a panel. Call immediately if there is a burning smell, if the cabinet is hot to the touch, or if the breaker trips. Give the technician the exact code and the point in the cycle: it saves a diagnostic visit's worth of time.
