The answer, before the detail
Short version: most refrigerator leaks are the appliance's own defrost water taking a wrong turn. Start with an overfill that freezes, then thaws onto the floor. If the water is clean, cold and continuous, close the supply valve first and treat it as plumbing.
The symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Damp at the door edges or sweating on the outside of the cabinet — Condensation rather than a leak — the cabinet is meeting humid room air somewhere it should not.
- A sheet of ice across the freezer floor — Defrost water freezing where it stands means the drain opening below it is blocked.
- The drain pan under the cabinet is overflowing — A pan that has cracked, or a cabinet tilted forward so the pan cannot hold what it collects.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is also warm and running constantly — A leak with a cooling failure is a cooling page problem: the ice that melted is the symptom of a stalled defrost, not a plumbing fault.
Causes, most likely first on a Kuch refrigerator
- An overfill that freezes, then thaws onto the floor — This produces an intermittent leak that follows no obvious schedule, which makes it one of the more frustrating sources to pin down — until the ice around the tube is actually seen. Top of the list, because everything below it is harder to check and less likely to be the answer. Documentation is thin on a brand like this, so the ranking leans on what can be observed directly rather than on a schematic.
- Blocked or frozen defrost drain — What makes this cause so common is that it is silent: nothing stops, nothing sounds different, and the first evidence is water somewhere it should not be, weeks after the tube first closed. It takes second place because the check is quick and because leaving it unchecked makes everything below it harder to read.
- A compression fitting or filter head weeping — Supply leaks behave differently from every other cause on this page: the water is clean and cold, it keeps arriving whether the unit runs or not, and it can put a serious quantity of water on a floor overnight. It ranks third: real, but rare enough that chasing it first wastes an afternoon.
- Door seal letting humid air in, producing condensation — It ranks here because it is free to test with a sheet of paper and because it also explains the other complaints the same cabinet may be producing: more frost, longer run times and warmer food in the door. Last, and deliberately so — it should be where a diagnosis ends rather than where it starts.
The order that finds it fastest
- Look behind and above the icemaker for a build-up of ice — Ice anywhere other than in the mould or the bin means water is going where it should not. Start at this check: it is the one most likely to end the job on its own.
- Check under the crisper drawers for standing water — Water at the lowest point of the fresh-food compartment with a dry floor behind the cabinet means the drain, not the supply. Second, and still no tools beyond a torch.
- Check whether the water keeps arriving when the unit is switched off — Water that arrives regardless of the cycle is mains water, and the shutoff is the immediate answer. Leave this one until the cheap checks are done; it is the slowest of the three.
What you can do yourself
- Clear ice from the bin and around the mould, then restart and watch one fill — One observed cycle tells you whether the fill is landing correctly.
About 20 min
- Empty the freezer floor and pour warm water slowly into the drain opening — Repeat until it runs freely; never push anything metal or sharp down the tube.
Tools: warm water, turkey baster or funnel, towelsAbout 40 min
- Close the water shutoff to the cabinet and see whether the leak stops — This is both the diagnosis and the first aid: it protects the floor while you arrange the rest.
About 15 min
- STOP once the checks above are clean and the fault remains — A clean sweep of the owner-side causes is itself a useful result: it tells the technician where not to look.

Safety
Pull the plug or turn off the breaker first; a panel that comes off with power on is a panel with live terminals behind it. Move the cabinet with the doors taped shut and take the weight with two people — a loaded cabinet is far heavier than it looks, and a tipped one lands on whoever is beside it.
When to hand it over
Book the visit once the pan is seated, the gasket seals and the drain runs freely and water still appears. Note where it appears first — that is the single most useful thing you can hand a technician.

Scope, and what is missing from it
This is the generalized page for Kuch refrigerators. If a page exists for your particular family or model line, it is linked from this section and it outranks this one for your unit. What is deliberately absent: part numbers, connector pinouts and the service-manual sequences, which are family-specific and wrong the moment they are generalized.
