In short
On a KovaSelect refrigerator, a warm cabinet that is still running usually means frost blanketing the coil so no air moves. Measure first, then check in the order below: three of the four causes cost nothing and the fourth is the only one that needs a technician.
Symptoms, including the misleading ones
- The compressor runs and never seems to shut off — A unit that cannot reach its setting never stops trying, so continuous running is a symptom rather than a habit.
- Condensation or sweating inside the fresh-food compartment — Warm humid air is getting in and meeting cold surfaces, which happens when the cabinet cannot hold its setting.
- The freezer is cold but the fresh-food side is not — Cold is being made. Something is stopping it from getting where it is needed, which narrows the list sharply.
- NEAR MISS — it cools fine but cycles loudly every few minutes — Noise with normal temperatures belongs on the noise page, not this one. Temperature is the test that decides which page you are on.
The causes in order of likelihood
- Frost blanketing the coil so no air moves — A defrost system that has stalled gives no warning at all, because its failure mode is simply not running — nothing trips, nothing sounds different, and the ice accumulates quietly. It heads the list because it is the failure this class shows first, and the one an owner can settle without opening anything. The platform behind a smaller badge is usually a common contract build, so the causes that lead here are the generic ones that class is known for.
- A fan that has stopped turning — Fans are the only fast-moving parts in a refrigerator, so they are the mechanical items that genuinely wear out, and either one failing produces a warm cabinet with a perfectly healthy compressor. Second, and the last of the causes that a careful look will settle on its own.
- Door seal leaking, or a door held open by the load — The door is the only part of the insulation that moves, so it is the only part that wears. A gasket that has hardened lets a steady stream of warm humid air into a cabinet designed to exclude it. Third: the checks above will usually have found the fault before this one is reached.
- A leak or blockage in the sealed refrigeration circuit — A sealed circuit that has lost charge or blocked cannot be judged from outside, which is precisely why it belongs at the end of a list of things that can be judged from outside. It ranks last on the evidence rather than on its importance: when it is the answer, it is unmistakable.
Work through it in this order
- Take out the freezer drawer or baskets and look at the rear panel — Frost on the panel, or ice visible through its vents, is the answer. A light dusting is normal; a solid sheet is not. First, because it separates the top two causes in under a minute.
- Look through the base grille at the condenser fan while the unit runs — A blade that is stationary, or one that is fouled by dust and debris, is visible without taking anything apart. Follow with this: it either confirms the second cause or clears it for good.
- Shut the door on a sheet of paper and pull, at several points around the frame — Paper that slides out freely anywhere shows you where the seal is leaking. Last of the owner-side checks; anything past it belongs to a technician.
What an owner can safely check
- Clear the freezer vents and check the rear panel for a frost sheet — Unpack the freezer down to the back wall so the air paths are actually visible.
About 20 min
- Press the freezer door switch and listen for the fan to start — Do it with the light on and off so you can tell which sound is which.
About 5 min
- Unload the door shelves and repack so nothing holds the door open — Then watch the door close on its own from half open — it should pull itself shut.
About 15 min
- STOP once the checks above are clean and the fault remains — A clean sweep of the owner-side causes is itself a useful result: it tells the technician where not to look.
The safety part
Safety
Switch the power off at the plug or the breaker before anything comes apart, and leave it off while you work. A refrigerator carries a capacitor that holds a charge after the power is off, and the door switch is there to cut the fan for a reason — never defeat it to keep the light or the fan running while your hands are inside.
The line between a fix and a call
Call once the seal, the vents, the coil and the clearance are all right and the cabinet still cannot hold food cold. Move perishables out first — food safety sets the timetable here, not the appliance.

The limits of this page
What you are reading is written for the class, not for one KovaSelect model. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, carries what this page cannot: the exact part numbers, the board layout and the disassembly order for that line. Go there first if your model is named.
