The short answer
This code comes from the oven own self-check rather than from a sensor: the lower oven appliance manager or its wiring did not answer, or answered wrongly, when the control polled it. The oven will not run a cycle reliably until it is cleared.
This code and its neighbours on this appliance
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F6 E9 | There may be a problem with the Lower Oven Appliance Manager, or the associated wiring. |
| F6 EA | There may be a problem with the User Interface, or the associated wiring. |
| F6 E8 | There may be a problem with the Microwave Appliance Manger Control or the associated wiring. |
What you see alongside the code
- Buttons respond but nothing happens when a cycle is selected — The interface is alive and the control behind it is not completing the command.
- The oven starts a cycle and abandons it — The abort is the board refusing to continue after its check failed partway.
- NEAR MISS - the code showed once and has not returned — A single appearance after an interruption is not a failed board.
The causes, likeliest first
- A corrupted control cycle after a supply interruption — Ranked where it is because it is both the most common and the only one an owner can clear.
- A loose or backed-out connector at the board — The board carries several multi-pin connectors and a partly seated one produces an intermittent version of exactly this fault.
- A failed relay or driver on the lower oven appliance manager or its wiring — This is the fault the code literally describes.
Check in this order, and why
- Establish whether the code predates or follows a power event — A code that arrived with a storm is a different repair from one that arrived on its own.
- Do two full power-downs, not one — A single short cycle sometimes fails to drain the board.
- Note which functions still work — The surviving functions map the fault onto a part of the control, which shortens the visit.
The owner-safe procedure
- Write down the exact code and when it shows — At idle, at start, or partway in. A control fault is diagnosed largely from that timing.
About 5 min
- Power down at the breaker, then restore — The reset is diagnostic as much as corrective - a code that survives it has been classified.
About 8 min
- Check the plug or terminal block is fully seated where you can see it — Only where it is visible and only with the breaker off.

Safety
Kill the breaker before any panel comes off - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a built-in installation the disconnect is usually behind or above the oven rather than at a plug, so verify the circuit is dead rather than assuming. A board pulled with the supply live is the single most common way this repair goes wrong. Photograph every connector before it is unplugged. A connector refitted one position out causes a second fault that looks nothing like the first.
When this is a service call
Two clean resets is the boundary. Past it the honest options are a harness trace and a board replacement, and telling those apart needs a meter rather than a symptom. Because a control board is among the more expensive parts on the oven, it is worth having the supply and the harness cleared before one is ordered. If the appliance is under warranty, start with the manufacturer channel. An independent repair can affect the cover.

What this page does not cover
Everything above is generalized information. It is written for F6 E9 as the KitchenAid oven code list documents it across the brand rather than for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked from the code index for this appliance. The codes listed beside it in the table above are documented differently, so read the characters on your display carefully rather than working from a code that merely looks similar.
