The short answer
F6 points at the relay control board or its wiring. The oven should be treated as out of service until the code stops returning after a clean power-down.
This code and its neighbours on this appliance
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F6 | The oven could not execute the function. There may a problem with the Relay Control Board, or the associated wiring. |
| F1E1 | The oven could not execute the function. There may a problem with the Relay Control Board, or the associated wiring. |
| F6 E1 | There may be a problem with the Appliance Manager, or the associated wiring. |
What you see alongside the code
- The oven starts a cycle and abandons it — The abort is the board refusing to continue after its check failed partway.
- The display flickers or resets on its own — A supply problem to the board shows this way and produces the same code.
- The code returns within moments of every reset — A hard fault rather than a corrupted cycle, and the distinction decides the repair.
- NEAR MISS - the code showed once and has not returned — A single appearance after an interruption is not a failed board.
What actually causes this, ranked
- A corrupted control cycle after a supply interruption — Ranked where it is because it is both the most common and the only one an owner can clear.
- A loose or backed-out connector at the board — The board carries several multi-pin connectors and a partly seated one produces an intermittent version of exactly this fault.
- A failed relay or driver on the relay control board or its wiring — This is the fault the code literally describes.
Check in this order, and why
- Check nothing else on the circuit is tripping — A breaker that is nuisance-tripping explains the code without the board being at fault at all.
- Cut power for several minutes and restore it — The single owner action with a real chance of clearing this class of code.
- Count how many resets the code has now survived — Two is the point at which it stops being worth resetting again.
The owner-safe procedure
- Switch the breaker off and wait — Give it several minutes rather than several seconds.
About 6 min
- Restore power without touching any control — Let the oven complete its own start-up check before you ask it for anything.
About 3 min
- Select the simplest cycle the oven offers — If the simplest one runs, the fault is in a branch rather than the whole control.
About 10 min
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and control boards hold one longer than most. The board shares its housing with the supply terminals, so there is no part of this check that is safe with the power on. Never bridge or jumper a connector to see what happens. Tell whoever else is in the house that the breaker is off, so nobody restores it while a panel is open.
When this is a service call
Call once the code has survived two complete power-downs. Everything that remains - connector seating, harness continuity, supply voltage at the board - is live work inside the control housing, and the parts are not returnable once fitted. Call immediately if the oven trips its breaker, smells hot, or shows the code alongside a display that will not stay lit. Ask for the failed component to be shown to you. It is the simplest guard against a part being replaced on suspicion.

What this page does not cover
Read this as generalized information. It is written for F6 as the KitchenAid oven code list documents it across the brand rather than for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked from the code index for this appliance. Some of the codes listed beside it in the table above carry the same documented meaning on this platform and some are documented differently, so check the characters on your display carefully before acting on this page.
