The short answer
C83 is the overheat protection on a surface cooking area doing its job. The area should be allowed to cool completely before it is used again, and the reason it overheated is what matters.
This code and its neighbours on this appliance
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| C83 | The surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated. |
| C82 | The surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated. |
| C81 | The surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated. |
What you see alongside the code
- The area works again once it has cooled — Recovery on cooling is expected behaviour for a protective shutoff.
- The code returns quickly under ordinary use — That is the version that points at a real fault rather than a one-off event.
- The cooktop surface feels hotter than usual around the area — Heat spreading rather than transferring is a sign of a pan or contact problem.
- NEAR MISS - no area works at all — A cooktop that is entirely dead is a supply or control fault, not an overheat shutoff.
What actually causes this, ranked
- An empty, dry or badly matched pan — Ranked first because it is overwhelmingly the most common and needs no repair at all.
- A warped pan base or poor contact — Heat that cannot transfer stays in the surface. A pan that rocks or has a domed base does this reliably.
- Restricted cooling or ventilation around the cooktop — The area sheds heat downward as well as upward, and a blocked path under a built-in cooktop raises the whole surface temperature.
Check in this order, and why
- Let the area cool completely and try it again — Recovery on cooling confirms the shutoff worked rather than failed, and it costs only time.
- Check the pan you were using — Flat base, right size, and something in it. Most of these end here.
- Try the same pan on a different area — It separates the pan from the appliance in one step.
The owner-safe procedure
- Switch the area off and let the cooktop cool fully — Do not attempt to cool it with water or a cloth. Give it time.
About 45 min
- Check the pan base is flat and sits without rocking — Sight across it on a flat surface. A domed or warped base is a common cause and an easy one to miss.
About 5 min
- Try the area again with a suitable pan containing food or liquid — Never test an overheat shutoff with an empty pan - that is what triggered it.

Safety
Treat the surface as hot long after the shutoff acts - the code means the area exceeded its limit, and the glass or the element holds that heat. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never pour water on an overheated cooking area and never cover it to cool it faster. Tell whoever else is in the house that the breaker is off, so nobody restores it while a panel is open.
When this is a service call
Call when the shutoff operates repeatedly with a suitable pan and a cool start. At that point the limiter, its sensing or the control is at fault, and all three are under the cooktop. Call immediately and cut power at the breaker if an area stays on after being switched off - that is the one version of this that does not wait. Ask for the failed component to be shown to you. It is the simplest guard against a part being replaced on suspicion.

What this page does not cover
Read this as generalized information. It is written for C83 as the KitchenAid range code list documents it across the brand rather than for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked from the code index for this appliance. The codes listed beside it in the table above carry the same documented meaning on this platform and are covered on their own pages, so check the characters on your display carefully before acting on this one.
