The short answer
A KitchenAid dishwasher that stops cleaning well has usually lost water pressure where it matters: a filter packed with debris or a spray arm that cannot turn freely. Both are owner-serviceable in minutes. Loading is the third answer and the one owners least expect, because a single tall item can shadow half a rack. Because these usually stand in a tight spot, the space around the unit is worth checking before anything inside it.
What you observe
- A white film on glassware — That is water chemistry and rinse aid rather than dirty water.
- Grit left on dishes on the lower rack — Water is circulating but carrying debris back onto the load.
- NEAR MISS — water standing in the bottom afterwards — That is a drainage fault and belongs on the drainage page.
Causes, most likely first on a KitchenAid dishwasher
- Filter and sump packed with debris — Id: filter — The filter catches what comes off the dishes. Full, it starves the pump and recirculates grit, so the load comes out worse than it went in. First on this class: the filter is a manual part on these machines, and it is the maintenance step owners most often do not know about.
- Spray arm blocked or not turning — Id: spray — Second: holes clog with scale and food, and a single tall item can stop the arm dead. Either way whole sections of the load get no water.
- Loading that blocks the spray — Id: loading — Third: nested bowls, a board laid flat, or a tall item in the wrong slot shadow everything behind them. The machine sprays exactly as it should and the dishes stay dirty.
- Incoming water not hot enough — Id: watertemp — Last, and the reason the order matters: a machine fed from a long cold pipe run starts with water far below what the cycle expects, and no cycle recovers fully from a cold start.

- Pull the filter out and look at what is in it — It should twist out by hand; what it holds tells the story. First because it is the top-ranked cause above and costs nothing.
- Spin each spray arm by hand and look through its holes — It should turn freely and every hole should be clear. Second because its cause ranks second above.
- Reload one rack deliberately and run it again — One changed variable is worth more than any guess. Third because its cause ranks third above.
What an owner can safely check
- Remove and rinse the filter, and clear the sump — Twist it out, rinse under the tap, check the sump for glass and labels before refitting.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the machine off at its breaker or unplug it before reaching under the spray arm assembly or behind the kickplate — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Watch for broken glass in the sump; it is the commonest injury in this job. Never mix dishwasher detergent with bleach products, and never run the machine with the door interlock defeated.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter, the arms, the loading and the detergent have all been put right and the results are still poor — at that point the circulation pump, the heater or the diverter is the remaining answer, and all three sit behind panels. Call sooner if the machine never sounds like it is filling, because that is a supply fault rather than a cleaning one. Parts are dealer-ordered against the model number on the rating plate, and the service documentation for the family is available to the technician.
