The short answer

Causes, most likely first on Kenmore
- An unbalanced load the machine will not spin — The control detects an off-centre drum, stops, redistributes and tries again. Safety
Switch the machine off at the breaker before opening a panel or the pump filter - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Turn both supply taps off before disturbing a hose. Never force a locked door on a machine that still has water in it: drain it through the pump filter first, into a tray, with towels down.
When to call a technician
Call once the load, the pump filter, the taps and the hoses are proven good and the cycle still stalls at the same point, because the next checks are on the lock, the pressure system and the control with power applied. Call sooner if the machine trips its breaker, or if water appears under it while it stalls.
