The short answer
An undercounter Julien cabinet that runs without cooling is usually strangled by its own housing rather than failing inside: a built-in unit breathes through a grille, and a blocked grille produces exactly this. Check the ventilation path, then the door, then the coil. The sealed system comes last for a reason. Because these usually stand in a tight spot, the space around the unit is worth checking before anything inside it.
What you observe
- It never switches off — The same fault from the other side, and harder on the compressor than normal cycling.
- One part is colder than another — Cold at the back with warmth at the front is an airflow story, not a capacity story.
- NEAR MISS — silent, and nothing is cold — That is a supply or start fault and belongs on the page for a unit that will not start.
Causes, most likely first on a Julien refrigerator
- Condenser coil cannot shed its heat — Id: condenser — The coil at the back or underneath dumps the heat pulled out of the box. Blanketed in dust, or boxed in with no air path, it cannot, and the cabinet drifts warm however long the compressor runs. First on a built-in: the grille is the only air path it has, and a kickplate full of dust or blocked by flooring closes it. It moves up a place here because these units are installed where space is short, and short space is exactly what this fault needs.
- Ambient heat and load beyond its capacity — Id: ambient — Second: every cabinet is rated for a room-temperature range and only so much warm content at once. A hot garage, a sunlit corner or a full load put in warm all give a unit that runs constantly and reads warm.
- Door not sealing, or not quite closing — Id: doorseal — Third: a hardened gasket, a door held ajar by a shelf or a bottle, or a cabinet tilted so the door will not swing shut lets warm humid air in continuously, and the unit never catches up.
- Sealed system or compressor fault — Id: sealed — Last, and the reason the order matters: a leak, a blockage or a compressor that no longer pumps gives a cabinet that runs and never cools. It is the least common cause here and the only one that is not an owner repair.
Check in this order, and why
- Find the condenser and feel whether it is hot and clean — Warm and clean is right; furred is the finding. First because it is the top-ranked cause above and costs nothing.
- Look at the room, the sun and what went in warm — Placement and load show up here before anything internal does. Second because its cause ranks second above.
- Close the door on a strip of paper and pull — It should drag everywhere, corners included. Third because its cause ranks third above.

- Check the door all round with a strip of paper — The paper should drag everywhere; where it slides free is where warm air gets in.

- Restore the clearance the manual asks for and retest — Pull it out, leave the gap, and give it a day before judging.

- Empty it, switch it off and let it stand with the doors open — If it works afterwards and fails again days later, the defrost system is the cause.
About 45 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or the sealed system — That is where owner checks end: refrigerant work is licensed work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Attempt nothing on the sealed system: it is under pressure and the work is licensed. Leave the door switch wired as it is; it cuts the fan for a reason. A tall cabinet is heavy and top-loaded, so get help before pulling one out.
When to call a technician
Call once the seals, the coil, the clearance and the setting are proven good and it still will not hold temperature — that points inside, where owner checks end. Call immediately for oil at the compressor or tubing, or a smell of burning: oil outside the pipework means the system is open. Parts are ordered against the rating plate inside the door, and a built-in cabinet has to come out of its housing before most of them can be reached.
