The short answer
FC E1 points at the cooktop user interface — the touchpad — or the wiring to it. The zones are generally capable; what has failed is the way instructions get into the appliance. That distinction matters because it puts the repair at the cheaper end of the cooktop rather than at the power end. Work down the diagnostic order before anything comes apart; the ranking is the part of this page worth the most.

| FC E1 | There may be a problem with the Cooktop User Interface (Touchpad), or the associated wiring. |
What you observe, and what to record
- Keys do not respond, or need repeated presses — The interface reading badly rather than the zones failing.
- Whether the code is steady or intermittent — A fault that is present every time is far quicker to find than one that comes and goes, and the two are diagnosed differently.
- Whether anything on the same circuit misbehaves — Lights that dim, a breaker that has tripped before, or another appliance acting up all move the search away from this one.
Causes, most likely first on this cooktop
- Residue or moisture on the panel — First, and always first, because it mimics every interface fault there is and costs nothing to eliminate.
- A connector on the interface harness that has relaxed — Second: the harness is disturbed by any work on the appliance and lives in a space that cycles hot and cold.
- The touchpad or its board has failed — Third: genuine, and identified once the panel is clean, dry and the link has been checked.
Check in this order, and why
- Clean the panel properly and dry it, then retest — Eliminates the commonest cause before anything else is considered.
- Test every key and map which fail — One key, one row, or the whole panel — three different answers.
- Cut power for a minute and watch the start-up — Separates a latched state from a standing fault.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the panel with soap and water on a cloth, then dry it — Not sprayed cleaner, which runs into the seams and makes things worse.

- Photograph the display with the code showing — Codes are easy to transcribe wrongly and a photograph is not. It also timestamps the fault, which matters if it becomes intermittent.
About 5 min
- Keep a short log of when the code appears — Date, what the cooktop was doing, and how long it had been running. Two entries make a pattern; one does not.

- STOP HERE — the touchpad is bonded under the glass — It is reached from below, on the live side.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not pour water onto hot glass to cool it and do not work on a top that is still warm: thermal shock cracks a ceramic surface, and a cracked top takes the whole appliance out of service.
When to call a technician
Call once the panel is clean, dry and cold and keys still fail, especially if the failures form a pattern — one row or one area. Bring that map to the call. A touchpad is a moderate part and the labour is reaching it, so an accurate description saves a diagnostic visit. Have the model number and a photograph of the display ready when you call — between them they decide which documentation the code gets read against.

What this page does not cover
This page reads FC E1 for Jenn-Air cooktops in general, from the manufacturer's shared code index. A code can be documented differently for one family, so where a model-line page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not here: wiring colours, connector positions and part numbers, which differ by family.
