The short answer
A drum that turns without heat: on an Insignia dryer that is usually a restricted vent run, not a failed heating element. Second, and worth checking in the same hour, is a blinded lint filter. Work the order below -- cheap causes first, the one that is not an owner fix last.
What you are looking at
- The drum turns and the load stays damp — A full cycle leaves clothes warm and wet.
- The load is cold at the end — No warmth at all in the drum or the clothes.
- The cycle runs much longer than usual — Auto-dry keeps extending and never finishes.
- NEAR MISS -- a scorched smell with the heat — Stop the machine.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The vent run is restricted — Lint in the duct, a crushed flexible hose behind the machine or a blocked outside flap traps hot wet air. The machine overheats, the cutoff opens, and the load comes out warm and damp. Top of the list on a retailer house brand -- on an Insignia unit -- mainstream mechanics, cost taken out of the electronics, the vent is the part nobody maintains and the one that causes most no-heat calls on any dryer.
- The lint filter is blinded — A filter that looks clean can be sealed by fabric-softener film. Water poured on it will sit rather than run through, and airflow drops enough to trip the cutoff. This rank, because no airflow through the filter means no drying, whatever the element does.
- Only one leg of the supply is live — An electric dryer turns on one hundred twenty volts and heats on two hundred forty. Lose one leg to a half-tripped breaker and the drum tumbles perfectly with no heat at all. Ranked here because a missing leg gives a machine that runs and cannot heat, with no other symptom.
- A cycling thermostat or the control — A cycling thermostat that opens too early, or a control that will not call for heat, needs a meter on live terminals and a wiring diagram. That is where owner checks end. It comes last because it is the one cause here that is not an owner repair, so it is last.
Check in this order, and why
- Feel the flow at the outside flap — Run the machine and check the outlet; weak or cool flow is a restricted run.
- Pour water through the filter — Water that pools rather than running straight through means the filter is blinded; wash it.
- Only after vent, filter and supply are proven — Good airflow, a clean filter, both poles live and still no heat is a service call.
