The short answer
A drum that turns without heat: on an IPSO dryer that is usually a blinded lint filter, not a failed heating element. The next thing to rule out is a restricted vent run. The top of that list is owner work; only the last cause needs a technician.
What you are looking at
- The drum turns and the load stays damp — A full cycle leaves clothes warm and wet.
- The load is cold at the end — No warmth at all in the drum or the clothes.
- The cycle runs much longer than usual — Auto-dry keeps extending and never finishes.
- NEAR MISS -- the drum does not turn at all — That is a start or drive fault and belongs on another page.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The lint filter is blinded — A filter that looks clean can be sealed by fabric-softener film. Water poured on it will sit rather than run through, and airflow drops enough to trip the cutoff. Top of the list on a commercial-duty machine -- on an IPSO commercial machine running cycle after cycle, a filmed filter is invisible to the eye and is the cheapest cause on this list to find.
- The vent run is restricted — Lint in the duct, a crushed flexible hose behind the machine or a blocked outside flap traps hot wet air. The machine overheats, the cutoff opens, and the load comes out warm and damp. This rank, because trapped air trips the cutoff before the load ever dries.
- A thermal fuse or cutoff has opened — A restricted vent overheats the machine and the safety device opens -- permanently, on many platforms. The drum still turns, and the heat never comes back until the fuse is replaced and the vent fixed. This rank, because an opened cutoff explains heat that vanished all at once.
- A cycling thermostat or the control — A cycling thermostat that opens too early, or a control that will not call for heat, needs a meter on live terminals and a wiring diagram. That is where owner checks end. It comes last because it is the one cause here that is not an owner repair, so it is last.
Check in this order, and why
- Pour water through the filter — Water that pools rather than running straight through means the filter is blinded; wash it.
- Feel the flow at the outside flap — Run the machine and check the outlet; weak or cool flow is a restricted run.
- Only after vent, filter and supply are proven — Good airflow, a clean filter, both poles live and still no heat is a service call.

- Wash the lint filter and test it with water — Water should run straight through.

Power off at the plug or the breaker first; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a gas machine, if you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off -- leave the building and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call once the lint filter, the full vent run and the door switch are ruled out.
