The short answer
Dishes that come out dirty or gritty: on an Insignia dishwasher that is usually a fouled filter recirculating dirty water, not a failed wash pump. Second, and worth checking in the same hour, is a load blocking the spray. The top of that list is owner work; only the last cause needs a technician.

- The top rack is clean and the bottom is not — Or the reverse -- one rack consistently missed.

- NEAR MISS -- dishes are clean but wet — That is a drying fault, not a wash fault.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The filter is fouled — The filter catches what comes off the dishes. Packed with paper labels, seeds and grease, it recirculates dirty water and leaves a gritty film on everything. First here, because on an Insignia unit -- mainstream mechanics, cost taken out of the electronics the filter is the designed maintenance point and the one owners never open, so it comes first.
- The load is blocking the water — A tray, a large pan or an overhanging plate stops the spray arm turning or shadows everything behind it. The cycle runs perfectly and half the load never gets washed. Placed here: water that cannot reach a surface cannot clean it.
- The water arriving is not hot enough — A dishwasher relies on hot water at the inlet, and a long pipe run or a low heater setting starves it. Grease smears rather than lifting and detergent never dissolves fully. This rank, because detergent that has not dissolved leaves exactly this film.
- The detergent or rinse aid is the problem — Detergent that has gone hard in a damp cupboard, a pod stuck in a closed dispenser, or an empty rinse-aid reservoir all leave film and spots with nothing mechanically wrong. It ranks late because it is quick to see by checking the dispenser after a cycle.
- The wash pump or diverter — A worn pump or a diverter that no longer alternates racks gives weak pressure that no cleaning will fix. Confirming it needs the machine opened and a meter. It comes last because it is the one cause here that is not an owner repair, so it is last.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the filter and look at it — Twist it out, rinse it under the tap, and check the sump underneath for debris.
- Spin each spray arm by hand — Close the door slowly and watch for contact; anything that stops an arm is your cause.
- Only after filter, load and water are proven — A clean filter, free arms, hot water and fresh detergent that still washes badly is a service call.

- Pull and rinse the filter, and clear the sump — Twist the filter out, rinse it under the tap, and lift out debris underneath.

Safety
Power off at the breaker and close the supply stop first; wash water is hot enough to scald at the end of a cycle. Never run the machine with the kick panel off, and never mix cleaning chemicals in the tub.

Filters, arms, hoses and detergent are yours; pumps, valves, boards and anything behind the kick panel are not.
