The short answer
On an ILVE freezer, a new noise from a cabinet that is still freezing is usually vibration through an unlevel cabinet rather than a failing compressor. If that is clean, a fan blade clipping ice is next. Most causes below are owner checks needing no tools and no panel off; the last is a service call.
What you are looking at
- A heavy knock that ignores the lid — It is metallic, regular and unaffected by opening the cabinet.
- A drone you can hear through the wall — It rises and falls with the compressor.
- A rhythmic tick or warble from inside — It stops when the lid or door is opened.
- NEAR MISS -- gurgling and popping for a few minutes — That is refrigerant moving and the liner contracting, which is normal.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The cabinet is rocking on uneven feet — A cabinet that is not level passes normal compressor vibration into the floor and back into its own shell. Top of the list on a heavy pro-style unit -- on an ILVE appliance with a heavy door on stiff hinges, these cabinets live on rough floors, so vibration is the most common noise complaint of all.
- A fan is striking frost or ice — On a frost-free cabinet the evaporator fan clips a frost ridge and makes a rhythmic tick or a harsh warble. This rank, because a noise that dies with the lid open is the fan, and ice is what it is hitting.
- The condenser fan is fouled — A fan near the compressor pulls room air across the coil. Ranked here because a fouled blade is audible from below and stops when the compressor cycles off.
- The compressor mounts or the compressor itself — Hardened grommets let the compressor knock against its frame, and internal wear gives a heavy metallic knock that ignores the lid. It comes last because it is last because every cheaper sound above has to be eliminated first.
Check in this order, and why
- Push each top corner and watch for rock — Any movement means uneven load on the feet; set them and listen again.
- Open the lid and listen for the noise to stop — A noise that dies with the lid open is fan-related; then look for a frost ridge.
- Only after the checks above are clean — A heavy knock that ignores the lid and tracks the compressor is a service call.

- Open the lid or door and listen for the change — A noise that stops when it opens is inside the cabinet, on the fan side.
