How to Troubleshoot and Replace a GE Dryer Control Knob
GE dryer control knobs can crack, slip on their shafts, or break entirely from daily use. On older GE mechanical-timer dryers, the timer knob is the most stressed control as it is pulled outward to start the dryer and rotated to select cycles. On newer GE digital models, the knob may be a selector or option dial. This guide covers diagnosis and replacement for both configurations.
A slipping or broken knob does not necessarily indicate a timer failure — often the knob itself or the D-shaped shaft interface is the sole issue. Verifying this before ordering an expensive timer saves money and time.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Phillips #2 screwdriver, flat-head screwdriver (for prying), needle-nose pliers
- Parts needed: GE dryer knob (model-specific, $8-25) or timer assembly if shaft is stripped ($45-120)
- Time required: 10-30 minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
- Safety warning: Unplug the dryer before removing the control console cover.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Identify the Problem
Determine whether the issue is the knob or the timer shaft:
- Knob cracked or broken: Visual inspection confirms. Replacement knob needed.
- Knob slips on shaft but shaft is intact: The D-flat in the knob is worn. New knob fixes this.
- Shaft itself spins freely or is broken: The timer shaft has sheared. Timer replacement needed.
Step 2: Remove the Old Knob
GE dryer knobs pull straight off the shaft. Grip the knob firmly and pull toward you. If stuck, wrap a cloth around it for grip or use two flat-head screwdrivers behind the knob edge to pry evenly. Do not use pliers directly on the knob as they will crack the plastic.
Step 3: Inspect the Timer Shaft
With the knob removed, examine the shaft. It should have a D-shaped flat that prevents the knob from spinning freely. If the shaft is round (the flat worn away) or the shaft wobbles/has excessive play, the timer is failing internally. If the D-flat is intact and the shaft is firm, a new knob will resolve the issue.
Step 4: Install the New Knob
Align the D-flat inside the new knob with the shaft and push straight on. It should seat firmly with slight resistance. If the knob is loose on the shaft, verify you have the correct part number for your model. Some GE knobs use a set screw on the side — tighten this after positioning the knob at the correct index mark.
Step 5: Verify Operation
Plug in the dryer. Rotate the knob through all positions to verify it engages each cycle correctly. On pull-to-start models, pull the knob out and verify the dryer starts. Push back in to stop.
Timer Replacement (If Shaft is Damaged)
If the timer shaft is broken, the entire timer assembly must be replaced:
- Unplug the dryer
- Access the control console: remove screws at each end of the console (underneath the front edge), flip the console up and back on its hinges
- Locate the timer behind the control panel — a cylindrical component with multiple wire connections
- Photograph all wire positions before disconnecting
- Remove the timer mounting screws (usually two Phillips screws)
- Disconnect all wires (label them carefully — incorrect wiring can damage the new timer)
- Install the new timer, reconnect wires per your reference photos, reinstall mounting screws
- Lower the console, replace end screws, attach knob
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Troubleshooting Control Issues
- If the dryer runs continuously without advancing through the cycle, the timer motor inside the timer assembly has failed. The knob position does not change during operation. Timer replacement required.
- If certain cycles work but others do not, the timer contacts for those specific positions are burned. Timer replacement required.
- If the knob turns but the dryer does not respond in any position, check the thermal fuse first — on some GE wiring configurations, a blown thermal fuse prevents all operation, not just heat.
- On digital GE Profile dryers, knob issues are purely cosmetic/mechanical. The electronic control board handles cycle selection. If the display does not change when rotating the selector, the encoder behind the knob may have failed.
When to Call a Professional
- If multiple wires connect to the timer and you are not confident in reconnection
- If the control board on a digital model needs diagnosis
- If the dryer has additional issues beyond the knob (burning smell, no heat, strange noises)

FAQ
Q: Can I use a universal dryer knob on my GE dryer? A: Universal knobs with adapter inserts exist, but they often do not fit GE shafts precisely. The D-flat dimensions vary by manufacturer, and a loose-fitting universal knob will slip. Using the OEM GE knob by part number ensures proper engagement.
Q: Why does my GE dryer knob keep breaking? A: If the knob cracks repeatedly at the same point, the timer shaft may have a burr or misalignment that stresses the plastic. Sand any burrs from the shaft before installing a new knob. If the shaft has excessive play, the timer itself is wearing internally.
Q: Can I start my GE dryer without the knob? A: On pull-to-start models, you can use pliers to grip the shaft and pull it forward. This is a temporary measure — the shaft is meant for knob engagement. On push-to-start models with a separate start button, the timer knob only selects cycle.
Q: Are GE dryer timer knobs the same across all models? A: No. GE uses different knob designs across model generations and between standard and Profile lines. The shaft diameter, D-flat size, and cosmetic design all vary. Always match by model number.
