How to Replace LG Washing Machine Tub Bearings
Replacing the tub bearings on an LG front-load washer is an advanced, 3-5 hour job and the boundary between DIY and professional work. The bearings are pressed into the rear tub, so you strip the machine, split the outer tub, press the old bearings out and new ones in, and fit a fresh shaft seal.
The bearings carry the drum shaft and let it spin freely up to 1,400 RPM. As they fail you hear a worsening rumble or grind during spin, and may see rust-coloured staining on laundry as the bearing seal breaks down. This is the most labour-intensive repair on an LG washer, and doing it wrong cracks the tub housing for good.

Step-by-step#
1. Confirm the bearings, not something else#
Unplugged, spin the drum by hand — roughness, grinding, or side-to-side play means bearings. During a spin cycle, bearing failure is a low rumble that rises with RPM, distinct from the bang of worn shocks or the grind of a cracked rotor magnet, and rust streaks on white laundry confirm a failed seal.
2. Strip the machine#
Reaching the tub means removing nearly everything, in order: top panel, control panel, door boot and both clamps, front panel, all tub connections (inlet hoses, drain hose, pressure tube, wiring), counterweight bolts, shocks and springs, rear panel, rotor, and stator. The outer tub then lifts out — a two-person job with the counterweights on.
3. Split the outer tub#
LG outer tubs are two halves bolted or clipped around the rim. Remove every fastener and separate them; the drum, shaft, and spider stay in the front half, while the bearings sit in the rear half.
4. Press the old bearings out#
The rear half holds an inner (larger) and outer (smaller) bearing with a spacer between. Press the outer bearing out from the outside, then the inner, working from the correct side so you do not damage the housing bore, and remove the old shaft seal, cleaning all surfaces.
5. Press the new bearings in#
With correctly sized drivers, press the new inner bearing fully home, fit the spacer, then seat the outer bearing — applying force only to the outer race, since pressing on the inner race ruins the bearing instantly. Drive the new shaft seal in with its lip facing inward toward the bearings.
6. Reassemble#
Reverse the teardown, torquing to spec: tub-perimeter bolts around 8-10 ft-lbs, the rotor centre bolt to 35 ft-lbs with threadlocker, and the counterweight bolts to spec. Restore every hose, harness, and connector exactly as your photos show.
7. Test#
Run a Quick Wash, a Normal cycle with clothes, and a high-speed spin. The drum should spin silently at all speeds with no rumble or vibration — only a faint smooth whir.
8. Be honest about DIY#
If you do not own a bearing press, have never pressed bearings, or the housing is fragile plastic, professional service is the better value: a pro finishes in about 1.5-2 hours with the right tooling and warranties the work.
Troubleshooting#
- Rumble returns quickly: the shaft is scored and chewing the new seal — it needs polishing or replacement.
- Housing cracked during the press: the tub half is not repairable and needs replacing, which usually makes the job uneconomical.
- Leaking after reassembly: the shaft seal is not seated or the tub halves are misaligned — split the tub and reseat.
