The short answer
A Hotpoint ice maker that has stopped is most often switched off by its own bail arm, lifted while somebody packed the freezer. A freezer running slightly warm is the next candidate, then a blocked or overdue water filter throttling the fill. All three are owner checks. Only a failed fill valve or ice maker module is a service call, and both are far less common than the list above.
What you observe
- The bin is empty and the ice maker is silent — Check the bail arm before anything else.
- Hollow or undersized cubes — The mould is not filling completely. Flow, not freeze.
- A plug of ice at the fill tube mouth — The fill is being sprayed past the mould.
- Ice cream is soft as well as the bin being empty — The freezer is warm, so the mould never reaches release temperature.
- NEAR MISS — water leaking down the rear wall — That is a fill overflow, and it belongs on the leak page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Bail arm lifted, switching the ice maker off — First on this platform because the arm is a light wire that sits directly in the space people load food into. It takes nothing to knock it up, and there is no alarm or indication when it happens.
- Freezer compartment running slightly warm — Second: the module only harvests once the mould reaches release temperature, so a compartment a little above where it should be stops ice production long before food obviously suffers.
- Water filter overdue, or the supply throttled — Third. A restricted fill makes hollow, undersized cubes rather than none, which is the distinguishing sign.
- Fill valve or ice maker module failed — Last, and the reason for the order: these are real but far less common than the three above, and they are the only ones needing a meter.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the bail arm and lower it if it is up — Free, instant, and the single commonest answer.
- Check whether frozen food is properly hard — Tells you if the compartment is cold enough to make ice at all.
- Check the age of the water filter and the supply tap — Explains hollow cubes without opening anything.
- Look at the fill tube mouth for an ice plug — Left until here because it usually follows one of the above.
What an owner can safely check
- Lower the bail arm fully and wait a day — Nothing else changes. Check the bin the next morning.
About 5 min
- Feel a packet of frozen food for proper hardness — Soft food means the freezer is the cause, not the ice maker.
About 5 min
- Replace an overdue water filter and flush the supply — Run several litres through the dispenser afterwards.
About 20 min
- Thaw any ice plug at the fill tube with warm water — A cloth and warm water only. Never a metal probe.
Tools: warm water, clothAbout 20 min
- STOP HERE if the next step means the valve or the module wiring — Both need a meter on live terminals.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching behind the cabinet; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the water shut-off before touching the filter head or the inlet valve. Never thaw a fill tube with a heat gun or free a mould with a screwdriver — the liner and the mould both damage easily and the repair then costs many times what the original fault would have. Dry the floor before restoring power.
When to call a technician
Call when the bail arm is down, the freezer is genuinely cold, the filter is current and the mould still never fills — the fill valve or the module is then the answer and both need a meter. Call sooner if the freezer itself is running warm, because the ice is a symptom and the cooling fault is the real job. Call immediately if water is running down the rear wall each time the ice maker tries to fill.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: ice maker and valve part identifiers, filter cartridge references, fill volumes, harvest temperatures and supply pressure figures, all of which differ between the top-freezer and side-by-side families.
