The short answer
Most new freezer noises are mechanical rather than sealed-system faults: a cabinet rocking on an uneven floor, ice against a fan blade, or contents resonating against a wall. On a Hamilton Beach cabinet the name is better known for countertop appliances, and the larger machines wearing it are compact builds bought for small spaces, which changes the order below. Noises that continue after the unit switches off are normally refrigerant settling and not a fault.
What you observe
- A buzz or chirp that changes when you open the door — On a frost-free cabinet that is the evaporator fan, which the door switch controls.
- Rattling from low at the back — The compressor area or the drain pan, both reachable behind the plinth.
- A gurgle that carries on after the unit stops — Refrigerant settling, and normal on every cabinet.

Causes, most likely first on this build
- Cabinet not level, or in contact with a wall or shelving — Ranked first on this build: these are put where they fit rather than where they sit well, often on a garage or utility floor that is nowhere near flat.
- Ice touching the evaporator fan blade — Second: the classic chirp that changes the moment the door opens.
- Contents or baskets resonating against the cabinet — Third: a basket out of its runner, or packets against a wall, buzz in sympathy with the compressor.
- Fan bearing dried out — Last: a candidate once ice and levelling are ruled out, and the part itself is inexpensive.
Check in this order, and why
- Rock a front corner gently — Any movement means the feet, and the feet are the first thing to correct.
- Empty a basket or two and listen again — Resonating contents are ruled in or out in minutes, and it costs nothing.
- Listen at the back while running, then just after switching off — Noise that continues after shutdown is settling refrigerant, which is normal.

- Level the cabinet so it stands firm on all feet — Adjust the feet or pack them until nothing moves when you push a corner.

Safety
Unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker before reaching behind the plinth or removing any panel, because a fan can start without warning and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not hold a door switch in while your hand is near a fan blade. A loaded chest freezer is extremely heavy, so empty it before moving it and get help.
When to call a technician
Call once the cabinet is level and clear, the ice is gone and the baskets are reseated and the noise remains, because what is left is a fan behind a panel or a compressor assessment. Call at once for metallic grinding from the compressor area, or any noise with a burning smell, and switch the unit off first. Parts are ordered against the model plate rather than the badge, and on a compact build the cost of a major part sits close enough to the cost of the machine that the quote decides the repair.
