What this usually means
On a Globest washer, water standing in the drum is nearly always a blocked pump filter or a kinked drain hose rather than a failed pump. Both are owner work and both take under half an hour. A pump that is genuinely dead usually announces itself: it makes no sound at all at the point in the cycle where it should be running hard.
The symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Water appears at the top of the standpipe — A house-drain restriction rather than an appliance fault.
- Water stands in the drum at the end of the cycle — The classic drain fault: filter, hose or pump.
- The machine drains but very slowly — A partial restriction, usually at the filter or a hose bend.
- NEAR MISS: water on the floor and none in the drum — That is a leak and it belongs on the page for a washer that is leaking water.
What it usually is, in order of likelihood
- A blocked pump filter — The filter exists to catch what the drum lets through, and once it fills with lint, hair, coins and buttons the pump can no longer move water past it. Ranked first on a Globest washer: the drain hose is often held at the wrong height by whatever is to hand, and height decides whether it drains at all.
- A blocked standpipe or house drain — When the standpipe itself is restricted the machine drains slowly or backs up, and water appears at the top of the pipe rather than in the drum. Ranked second on a Globest washer: hoses and couplers are connected and disconnected by hand repeatedly, which is where the faults come from.
- A drain hose at the wrong height — Too low and the machine siphons out while it fills; too high and the pump cannot lift the water, and both read to an owner as a drain fault. Ranked third on a Globest washer: these machines are small and get asked to do full-size work, which is a cause in its own right.
The order to work in, and the reason for it
- Listen at the machine during the drain stage — A pump straining against a blocked filter sounds quite different from one moving water freely.
- Watch the standpipe while the machine drains — Water rising at the top of the standpipe is a house-drain problem, not an appliance one.
- Check where the hose enters the standpipe against the height in the manual — A hose pushed far down the standpipe siphons, which empties the drum mid-cycle.

- Switch off, open the filter cover at the base and clear everything out of it — Have a shallow tray and towels ready: a full drum of water sits behind that cover.

Read this before you start
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before opening the pump filter or tipping the machine, and close both supply taps first. A drum full of water is extremely heavy, so never tip a machine that has not drained. Open the filter cover slowly with a shallow tray and towels in place, and mind the impeller behind it: the edges are sharp and it can turn unexpectedly.
When this becomes a service call
Call once the filter is clear, the hose runs freely into a bucket and the standpipe takes water without backing up, and the drum still will not empty — that points at the pump or at the control that drives it. Call a plumber rather than an appliance technician if the standpipe backs up on a poured bucket, because the fault is in the house drain.
