1. Shorted Bake or Broil Element (40% of cases)
When a heating element develops an internal short to its outer sheath (and thus to the grounded oven frame), it creates a direct short circuit. This draws hundreds of amps instantaneously, tripping the breaker within a fraction of a second.
Element shorts are often dramatic — you may see a bright arc flash, hear a loud pop, and notice a burn hole in the element. However, some shorts are intermittent: the element works normally until it reaches a specific temperature and thermal expansion closes an internal gap, creating a short.
GE bake elements (WB44T10011) and broil elements (WB44T10009) can develop shorts after self-clean cycles stress the element sheath.
Diagnosis: Visually inspect both elements for holes, blistering, or burn marks. With the oven disconnected from power, measure resistance from each element terminal to the element sheath (touch probe to outer metal casing): should read infinite (open). Any resistance reading = short to ground.

Inspection: With power disconnected, examine all visible wiring behind the rear panel. Look for: blackened insulation, bare copper showing, melted wire connectors, and burn marks on the oven frame where wires route.
