Most Likely Cause#
A GE electric oven that trips the breaker almost always has a heating element shorted to ground. When the resistance wire inside a bake or broil element touches its outer metal sheath — which is bonded to the grounded oven frame — it makes a dead short that pulls hundreds of amps and trips the breaker in a fraction of a second. After a shorted element come degraded internal wiring or a burned element connector, a failing terminal block where the house wiring meets the range, a shorted control board, and occasionally an old, worn-out breaker that is not the oven's fault at all.
These ranges run on a big 240V, 40- to 50-amp circuit, so tripping that breaker means a serious high-current fault. This is not one to reset and hope.
Do not repeatedly reset the breaker — each trip stresses the wiring and the breaker itself, and a high-current fault that keeps arcing is a fire risk. Never fit a higher-rated breaker to stop the trips, since the breaker is matched to the wire gauge, and do all testing with the power disconnected.

The shorted element — start here#
An element short is often dramatic: a bright arc flash, a loud pop, and a visible burn hole in the element, and self-clean heat is a common trigger that stresses the sheath. Some shorts are sneakier, staying hidden until the element heats and thermal expansion closes an internal gap. Test it with the oven disconnected: inspect both elements for holes, blistering, or burn marks, then measure resistance from each element terminal to the element sheath — it should read infinite, and any resistance at all means a short to ground. The common GE parts are the bake element WB44T10011 and the broil element WB44T10009, and swapping an element is an easy repair.
Wiring, terminal block, and board#
If the elements test clean, look at the wiring behind the rear panel: years of heat, especially from self-clean, crack insulation until bare copper touches the frame, and a loose or corroded element connector arcs and burns until it shorts. Then check the terminal block behind its cover plate at the back of the range, where the house wiring lands and carries the full 40- to 50-amp load — a loose connection there arcs and melts the block (the GE part is WB17T10006). And if the breaker trips the instant you restore power, before you turn anything on, the fault is in something always energized, usually the control board. On a very old range, a 25-plus-year-old breaker can also nuisance-trip below its rating, but that is an electrician's call, not an oven repair.

- Note when it trips — during heating, during self-clean, at power-on, or at random.
- Do not keep resetting; disconnect the range and inspect the elements for burn marks.
- Measure each element terminal to its sheath; any reading means a short to ground.
- Inspect the internal wiring behind the rear panel for cracked insulation and bare copper.
- Open the terminal-block cover and look for melted or arced connections.

A bake or broil element is an inexpensive, easy part and the most common fix. Wiring, connectors, and a terminal block are moderate repairs. The control board is the expensive item, and on an older range a shorted board is where repair and replacement get weighed.
