GE Range Switch Replacement — Fixing Stovetop Burner Control Problems
GE electric ranges use infinite switches to control surface burner elements (stovetop) and selector switches for oven functions. When a switch fails, the associated burner or oven function does not respond to the control knob, stays on permanently, or operates at the wrong heat level.
Infinite Switch (Surface Burner Control)
Infinite switches control the heat level of electric surface burners by cycling the element on and off at varying intervals. Turned to High, the element stays on continuously. Turned to Low, the element cycles on briefly and off for longer periods. At medium settings, the on/off ratio produces intermediate heat.
Symptoms of Infinite Switch Failure
- Burner does not heat at all — the switch contacts are permanently open
- Burner heats only on High — the switch cannot cycle; it is either full-on or off
- Burner stays on after turning knob to Off — the switch contacts are welded shut. This is a safety hazard — turn off the breaker.
- Indicator light stays on with burner off — the light circuit through the switch is stuck closed

Step-by-Step Replacement
Safety
Turn off the breaker. GE electric ranges operate on 240V.
Access
Pull the control knob off the switch shaft. Remove the back panel of the control console (2-4 screws). The infinite switch is directly behind the knob shaft, with 4-5 wire terminals.
Removal
Photograph or label all wire positions on the switch terminals. Disconnect the wires one at a time, transferring each to the same terminal position on the new switch. Remove the 2 mounting screws holding the switch to the console panel.
Installation
Mount the new switch. Verify all wires are on the correct terminals per your photo/labels. Replace the console panel and knob.
Testing
Restore power. Turn the knob to High — the burner should glow within 30 seconds. Turn to Low — the burner should cycle on and off (you may hear a quiet click as the switch cycles).

Safety: Switch Stuck On
If a burner stays on after turning the knob to Off, the switch contacts are welded shut. Turn off the breaker immediately. Do not use that burner until the switch is replaced. A stuck switch keeps the element energized at full power indefinitely, creating a fire and burn hazard.
