Before Condemning the Motor
Several cheaper components can mimic motor failure:
- Start capacitor — GE dishwasher motors use a start capacitor to provide initial torque. A failed capacitor produces a humming motor that will not start — identical to a seized motor. The capacitor is a small cylindrical component mounted near the motor. Test it with a capacitor-capable multimeter or swap with a known-good unit before buying a $130+ motor.

Step-by-Step Replacement
Preparation
Disconnect power at the breaker. Turn off the water supply valve. Run a short drain cycle (if the motor can still pump) to remove as much water from the tub as possible. Place towels and a shallow pan under the dishwasher.
Accessing the Motor
Remove the kick plate. The wash motor is mounted to the bottom of the sump assembly — a large plastic housing at the base of the dishwasher. You will need to disconnect the drain pump, water inlet, and several hoses to remove the sump with the motor.
Disconnect the water supply line from the inlet valve. Disconnect the drain hose from the drain pump. Disconnect the motor wiring harness. Remove the mounting bolts securing the sump assembly to the tub bottom (typically 4 bolts in a square pattern).
Removing the Motor from the Sump
With the sump assembly removed from the dishwasher, flip it over. The motor mounts to the underside of the sump with a locking ring or bolts. Rotate the locking ring counterclockwise (if equipped) or remove the mounting bolts. Pull the motor straight down from the sump. The impeller and seal assembly remain in the sump — inspect the impeller for damage and the seal for leaks.
Installing the New Motor
Transfer the impeller to the new motor shaft if it is not included. Install the new shaft seal (included with OEM motors — always use the new seal). Push the motor into the sump from below and secure with the locking ring or mounting bolts. Verify the motor shaft spins freely.
Reassembly
Reinstall the sump assembly in the dishwasher, reconnect all hoses, water supply, drain pump, and wiring harness. Tighten all connections and verify clamp positions.
Testing
Restore water and power. Run a normal wash cycle. Listen for smooth motor operation — no grinding, humming, or vibration. Open the door briefly during the wash phase and observe the lower spray arm — it should spin steadily. Check under the unit for leaks at all reconnected hose points.
