The short answer
A freezer that runs without freezing has usually lost airflow or lost its seal, and only rarely has it lost refrigerant. On a Galanz freezer the ranking below follows from the fact that this is a high volume value build with simple hardware, where the parts you touch every day are the parts that wear. Work through it in order, because the cheap causes are also the common ones.
What you actually observe
- Food is soft or partly thawed but the unit is running — Cold is being made and not moved, or warm air is arriving faster than the unit can deal with it.
- The cabinet is compact and is usually filled to its limit — A small cabinet with small vents is unforgiving about loading, and loading is free to change.
- NEAR MISS: the unit is dead, dark and silent — That is a supply fault and it starts at the outlet and the breaker, on a different page.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A cabinet overfilled or loaded with warm food — Packing the cabinet to the vents stops the air circulating, and a large warm load takes a long time to pull down. Ranked first on a Galanz freezer: this is a high volume value build with simple controls, and most complaints about it trace to loading, dosing or the setting chosen rather than to a failed part.
- A lid or door that is not sealing — A gasket gone hard, a hinge that has dropped or a basket holding the door open a fraction lets warm air in continuously. Ranked second on a Galanz freezer: the door hardware is the part the owner touches every single day, and on a value build it is the first thing to loosen.
- A condenser coil or vent that cannot shed heat — Dust on the coil, or a cabinet crammed against a wall, leaves the heat with nowhere to go. Ranked third on a Galanz freezer: the cabinet is compact and the vents are small, so anything in front of them matters immediately.
- A thermostat or sensor reading the cabinet wrongly — The unit stops calling for cooling because it believes it has arrived, and nothing else is wrong with it. Ranked fourth on a Galanz freezer: the control on a value build is simple, which makes it both less likely to fail and quicker to eliminate.
Check in this order, and why this order
- Look at how the cabinet is loaded before suspecting any part — How the cabinet is loaded changes what it is able to do, and loading is the one variable that is free to change.
- Close the lid or door on a strip of paper at several points — Paper that pulls out freely tells you the seal is the fault before you open anything.
What an owner can safely check
- Move packing clear of every vent and the fan grille, then run it for a day — Leave a real gap at each vent rather than a token one.
About 15 min
- Clean the gasket, then check the seal on paper all the way round — Warm soapy water restores a gasket that has only gone stiff, and it costs nothing to try first.
Tools: cloth, mild detergentAbout 15 min
- Vacuum the condenser coil and restore the clearance the manual asks for — Dust on the coil is the commonest reason a freezer runs constantly without reaching temperature.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 20 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a sealed panel off — That is the line where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off with a knife or a screwdriver: the coil is directly behind the liner and puncturing it ends the appliance. A loaded chest freezer is extremely heavy, so empty it before moving it.
When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the ice and the coil are all dealt with and the cabinet still will not hold its temperature, because the next step is a sealed system or control diagnosis behind a panel. Call at once if you smell burning or see oil around the compressor, and move the food while you wait rather than after.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Galanz freezer as a class rather than one family or model line. Gasket profiles, basket layouts, coil positions and control types differ from build to build and are deliberately not here. Where a family or model page exists for your cabinet, that page is the more specific answer and the one to read first.
