Frigidaire Dryer Sensor (DrySense Moisture Bars) Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire Gallery dryers (EFME prefix) with DrySense use two thin metal strips mounted inside the drum near the lint trap opening. These moisture sensing bars work by measuring electrical conductivity between them — when wet fabric touches both bars simultaneously, a small current flows, telling the control board the clothes are still damp. As clothes dry, the current decreases. When the board detects consistently low conductivity, it ends the cycle.
Standard Frigidaire dryers (FFRE/FFRG) may or may not have moisture bars depending on the model year. Older standard models use a timed dry only, with no auto-sense capability.
The Dryer Sheet Problem
The single most common DrySense issue is not sensor failure — it is dryer sheet wax residue coating the metal bars. Fabric softener sheets leave a thin invisible film on the sensor bars that insulates them from the wet fabric. The bars cannot detect moisture through the wax coating, so the dryer thinks clothes are dry when they are still damp, ending the cycle too early.
Fix: Clean the bars monthly with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. This dissolves the wax coating and restores sensor accuracy. If you use dryer sheets regularly, clean the bars every 2 weeks.

When the Bars Actually Need Replacement
True sensor failure (as opposed to wax coating) is less common but does happen:
- The bars are physically damaged — cracked, bent, or corroded from age
- The wiring harness connector at the back of the bars has corroded or loosened
- Cleaning with rubbing alcohol does not restore proper auto-sensing behavior
- The control board receives no signal from the sensors at all (check the board too)
Symptoms
- Dryer stops too early — clothes still damp — sensor reads "dry" prematurely. Most often caused by dryer sheet residue, not actual sensor failure
- Dryer runs for the full maximum time on auto cycles — sensor reads "wet" constantly. The board never detects the low-conductivity threshold. Could be shorted sensor bars or a board fault
- Auto-dry cycles inconsistent — drying times vary wildly for similar loads. Sensor readings fluctuate due to intermittent connection or partial wax coating

Sensor Cost
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| OEM moisture sensor bar assembly | $15–$40 |
| Electrolux cross-reference | same part |
| Aftermarket | $10–$25 |
| Professional labor | $80–$140 |
| DIY total | $10–$40 |
| Professional total | $90–$180 |
Replacement Procedure
- Unplug the dryer.
- Open the dryer door. The moisture bars are visible inside the drum, near the lint trap opening — two parallel metal strips, each about 4–6 inches long.
- Remove the lint screen for better access.
- From inside the drum, remove the screws holding the sensor bars to the drum wall (typically 2 screws per bar, Phillips #2).
- From behind the dryer or through the lint trap slot, disconnect the wire harness connector. On some models, you may need to remove the back panel for connector access.
- Install the new sensor bars — position in the same location, drive the screws, reconnect the harness.
- Replace the lint screen. Plug in the dryer.
- Test with a load of damp towels on an auto-dry cycle. The dryer should run until the towels are dry, then stop automatically.
Tools: Phillips #2, rubbing alcohol (for cleaning rather than replacing). Time: 15–25 minutes.

Cleaning vs. Replacing Decision
Before ordering new bars, try this 5-minute cleaning procedure:
- Dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol
- Wipe each metal bar firmly 3–4 times
- Run a test load on auto-dry
If the auto-dry cycle length returns to normal, the bars are fine — the issue was wax residue. Only replace if cleaning does not resolve the problem.
Timed Dry as a Workaround
If the moisture bars are not working and you are waiting for a replacement part, switch to Timed Dry mode instead of Auto Dry. Timed Dry ignores the moisture bars and runs for the duration you set. This is a functional workaround but requires you to estimate the correct drying time for each load.
Don't Void Your Warranty
Opening your appliance yourself may void the manufacturer warranty. Our repair comes with a 90-day guarantee, and we document everything for warranty compliance.

FAQ
Why does my Frigidaire dryer stop before clothes are dry?
Most likely dryer sheet residue on the DrySense moisture bars. Clean with rubbing alcohol first. If cleaning does not help, the sensor bars may need replacement.
How do I clean Frigidaire DrySense moisture bars?
Wipe each metal bar with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. Do this monthly, or every 2 weeks if you use dryer sheets regularly.
Where are the moisture bars in my Frigidaire dryer?
Inside the drum, near the lint trap opening. Two thin parallel metal strips, each 4-6 inches long.
Do all Frigidaire dryers have moisture sensors?
No. Gallery models (EFME) and some newer Standard models have DrySense. Older Standard models (FFRE/FFRG) may only have timed dry.
