Frigidaire Dryer Gasket (Drum Seal) Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire dryers use felt drum seals — not rubber gaskets — at the front and rear edges of the drum. These adhesive-backed felt strips wrap around the drum lip and create a friction seal against the front bulkhead and rear bearing plate. When the drum rotates, the felt slides against these stationary surfaces, preventing hot air from escaping the drum and clothing from getting caught between the drum and cabinet.
Front Seal vs. Rear Seal
Front drum seal: A felt strip glued around the front edge of the drum where it meets the front bulkhead. This seal also prevents clothing from falling between the drum and the front panel — if shirts or socks get caught under the drum, a worn front seal is almost always the cause.
Rear drum seal: A felt strip around the rear edge of the drum where it rests on the rear bearing support. The rear seal experiences more heat because the heating element is located at the rear of the drum on electric models, and the gas burner assembly is at the rear on gas models.
When you disassemble a Frigidaire dryer far enough to access one seal, you can typically access both. Replace both seals at the same time — the cost of the seals is negligible ($10–$20 each), and the labor to access them is the majority of the work.

Symptoms of Worn Drum Seals
- Dark scuff marks on clothes — the drum edge grinds against the bulkhead or cabinet with no felt cushion. Metal-on-metal contact creates black marks that transfer to clothing
- Clothes caught under the drum — items slip through the gap between the drum and front bulkhead. You find socks, underwear, or dryer sheets wrapped around the bottom of the drum when you disassemble
- Thumping or scraping noise — worn felt allows the drum to contact the stationary bulkhead with each rotation. The noise is rhythmic and tied to drum speed
- Hot exterior cabinet — air leaking past the worn seals escapes into the cabinet instead of routing through the blower and exhaust vent. The outside of the dryer feels hot to the touch
- Reduced drying efficiency — heated air bypasses the drum and clothes, venting into the cabinet space. Drying times increase
Drum Seal Cost
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| Front drum seal (OEM) | $10–$25 |
| Rear drum seal (OEM) | $10–$25 |
| Seal kit (front + rear + adhesive) | $15–$40 |
| Professional labor | $120–$200 |
| DIY total | $10–$40 |
| Professional total | $130–$230 |
The parts are inexpensive. Professional labor is high because drum seal access requires removing the drum — similar to blower wheel replacement.

Replacement Procedure
- Unplug the dryer. Turn off gas if gas model.
- Remove the top panel (rear screws or front spring clips).
- Remove the front panel — disconnect door switch, remove top screws, lift off bottom clips.
- Support the drum and slip the belt off the idler and motor shaft.
- Lift the drum out through the front.
- Peel the old front seal off the drum edge. Use a putty knife if adhesive is stubborn. Clean the drum edge with rubbing alcohol to remove old adhesive residue.
- Apply the new front seal — peel the adhesive backing and press the felt strip around the drum front edge, overlapping the ends slightly. Press firmly along the entire length.
- Repeat for the rear seal on the rear drum edge.
- Reassemble: drum in, belt routed around drum → idler → motor, front panel on, top panel on.
- Run the dryer for 5 minutes on air/no heat to verify the seals are bedding in and no scraping noise occurs.
Tools: Phillips #2, putty knife, rubbing alcohol, 5/16-inch nut driver. Time: 45–60 minutes.

Adhesive Tips
- Clean the drum edge thoroughly before applying new seals — old adhesive residue prevents the new seal from bonding
- Press firmly along the entire seal length. Run a roller (or a bottle) along the seal to ensure full adhesive contact
- The adhesive needs 10–15 minutes to set before reassembly. Do not rush this step
- Overlap the seal ends by 1/2 inch to prevent a gap at the seam

When Seals Cause Thermal Fuse Failures
Air leaking past worn seals bypasses the normal exhaust path. Instead of flowing through the blower and out the vent, hot air circulates inside the cabinet. The thermal fuse (mounted on the blower housing or exhaust duct) senses this abnormal heat and blows. If you have replaced the thermal fuse and it blows again within weeks, check the drum seals — they may be the root cause.
FAQ
Why are my clothes getting black marks in my Frigidaire dryer?
Worn front drum seal allows the drum edge to rub against the front bulkhead. Replace the front felt seal to eliminate metal-on-metal contact.
Should I replace both drum seals at once?
Yes. Both seals are $10-$25 each, and accessing one requires the same drum removal as accessing both. Always replace as a pair.
Can worn drum seals cause my Frigidaire dryer to overheat?
Yes. Air bypasses the drum and circulates in the cabinet instead of exhausting. This overheats the cabinet and can blow the thermal fuse.
How do I know if my Frigidaire dryer drum seals are worn?
Look for: clothes caught under the drum, black scuff marks on laundry, thumping noise, hot dryer exterior, or longer drying times.
