How E5C Differs from E4A
Frigidaire dryers monitor temperature at two points. E4A is the exhaust sensor (air leaving the drum). E5C is the inlet sensor (air entering the drum, directly after the heating element). The inlet sensor sits in a harsher environment because it reads temperatures up to 300 degrees F during initial heat-up, while the exhaust sensor sees 150-170 degrees maximum.
This higher thermal stress means the inlet NTC thermistor degrades faster than its exhaust counterpart. Expect inlet sensor failure two to three years earlier on average.
Where to Find the Inlet Sensor
The inlet thermistor mounts on or near the heater box assembly, which sits behind the drum at the rear of the dryer. On Affinity front-load models, remove the rear panel (six screws) to access the heater box. The sensor clips to a bracket on the air duct between the heater box outlet and the drum inlet. On top-load Frigidaire dryers, the heater box is at the bottom rear and the sensor is on the duct above it.
The sensor connects through a two-pin plug. Its wires route along the chassis to the control board.

Testing
Unplug the dryer. Locate the inlet thermistor. Disconnect its two-pin connector. At room temperature, expect 10,000-12,000 ohms (same NTC type as the exhaust sensor). Infinite means an open element. Under 500 ohms suggests a short. Both conditions trigger E5C.
If resistance is normal, check wiring continuity to the board connector. The wiring near the heater box is exposed to higher temperatures and degrades faster than other harness sections.

- Unplug dryer. Remove rear panel.
- Locate the sensor at the heater box duct. Release the mounting clip or single screw.
- Disconnect the two-pin plug. Note the orientation of the sensing tip.
- Install new sensor. Ensure the tip contacts the duct wall.
- Reconnect, reassemble. Run High heat timed dry for ten minutes. The dryer should produce normal heat.

Gallery vs. Standard Placement
Gallery models position the inlet sensor inside a recessed port in the heater duct for more accurate readings and better protection from lint buildup. Standard models mount the sensor externally on the duct surface, where lint accumulation around the sensor body can insulate it and cause premature drift.
FAQ
Can I swap the inlet and exhaust sensors? They use the same NTC element and part number on most Frigidaire dryers, so physically they are interchangeable. However, the board reads them on separate input channels with different expected ranges. Swapping them will not resolve E5C.
E5C only appears on the first cycle of the day. Why? Cold ambient temperature causes the NTC to read near the edge of its expected range. A marginally drifted sensor that reads normally at room temperature may read out-of-range at the lower temperatures found in unheated garages or basements, especially in winter.
Does lint cause E5C? Lint insulating the sensor body causes temperature reading lag rather than open-circuit failure. Heavy lint accumulation around the heater box can overheat the sensor and accelerate aging, but lint itself does not directly trigger E5C.
