The short answer
On Fisher & Paykel a freezer that runs without holding temperature is most often a door or lid that is not sealing, not a failed compressor. Ranked that way because the control holds temperature by varying compressor speed, so a struggling cabinet sounds normal for far longer than it should.
What you observe
- Food at the door is thawing while the back is fine — A seal or an airflow problem rather than a refrigeration one.
- Ice cream is soft but meat is still frozen solid — A cabinet sitting just above temperature rather than one that has failed outright.
- NEAR MISS: the cabinet is silent and nothing runs at all — That is a power, thermostat or start-relay fault and it is a different page. Check the outlet and the breaker first.
Causes, most likely first on Fisher & Paykel
- The lid or door is not sealing — First here, where a modulating control hides a developing fault rather than announcing it. A hinge out of adjustment, a gasket that has taken a set, or a basket standing proud of the rim leaves a gap that never lets the cabinet get ahead. Frost building around one spot on the rim is the cabinet telling you exactly where the gap is.
- The thermostat or sensor is reading the wrong temperature — Second, and the cause this control is least able to tell you about. A dial knocked during a load, a sensor that has come adrift of its clip, or a control that has drifted. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below, and a thermometer in the cabinet settles in one reading what the dial cannot tell you.
- The condenser coil or the ventilation gap is choked — Third. A freezer cannot get cold inside unless it can get rid of heat outside.
- The sealed system: compressor, start relay or lost refrigerant — Last, and it is the reason the order above matters. The compressor hums briefly and cuts out, or runs with no cold at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points round the rim — Frost at a single point on the rim is a located gap, not a general problem.
- Read the setting, then measure the cabinet with a thermometer overnight — One measurement separates a control fault from a refrigeration fault.
- Look at the coil and at the clearance around the cabinet — A visible dust blanket is a confirmed cause and it is owner work.
What an owner can safely check
- Paper-test the gasket right round and clean the gasket and the frame — Check nothing inside is holding the lid or door proud of its seal.
Tools: a sheet of paper, warm soapy waterAbout 15 min
- Leave an appliance thermometer in the middle of the load overnight — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
Tools: appliance thermometerAbout 15 min
- Vacuum the coil and open a clear gap behind and to each side — Brush the loose debris off first, then vacuum.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 20 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off with a knife, a screwdriver or any metal tool: the evaporator plate is thin, a puncture releases refrigerant and it ends the life of the cabinet.
When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the load, the frost and the coil have all been dealt with and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. Call immediately if the compressor hums and cuts out repeatedly, or if you can see oil around the compressor or the tubing, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open. Discard anything that has thawed and stayed above temperature rather than refreezing it.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the brand and the freezer class, not one family or model line. Where a family-specific or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and it takes precedence over this one. Not here: part numbers, wiring colours and component locations, which differ by family.
