The short answer

- Push each top corner down in turn and see whether the machine rocks — A machine that rocks under hand pressure explains a noise with nothing worn at all.

- Empty the drum, check the pockets of the last load, and lift the lint filter to look below it — A torch down the filter housing often shows the coin before anything is opened.

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the lint housing. Never reach into a drum or a blower housing with the machine powered. Call when the noise turns with the drum and has grown over months, when it is metallic and constant, or when every check above has come back clean. Glides, rollers and belts are wear parts and they need panels off. Call immediately if the noise comes with a burning smell, a hot cabinet or a drum that has become hard to turn by hand.
