The short answer
On Fisher & Paykel a cabinet that runs but will not cool is most often a stopped fan on the side that has gone warm, not a dead compressor. Ranked that way because a column boxed into joinery can only reject heat through the gaps the installer left it.

- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor; the air inside is not cold.

- The fan that moves cold air has stopped — First on a cabinet boxed into joinery, which can only work with the gap the installer left it. On any cabinet with forced air, one stalled fan starves a whole compartment while the other one reads normal. On a static-cooled cabinet there is no such fan, which removes the cause entirely and shortens the list.
- The condenser coil or its grille is choked — Second, and on a fitted column it is the one the owner can still reach. Dust, pet hair or outdoor debris on the coil stops the unit shedding heat, so it runs continuously and never reaches temperature. It is the single most common cause that an owner can fix outright.
- Frost or ice blocking the cold-air path — Third. Ice builds across the evaporator or across the vents between compartments, airflow stops, and the cabinet warms while the compressor keeps running.

- Open the door and listen for the fan, then press the door switch in by hand — A fan that runs with the door open under a pressed switch is working.
- Pull the grille and look at the coil at the back or underneath — A visible dust blanket is a confirmed cause, not a suspicion.
- Look for a sheet of frost in the freezer or at the vents between compartments — It separates an airflow fault from a cooling fault before any tool comes out.

- Listen at each compartment with the door switch held in — Silence on one side with a healthy compressor hum points at that side of the airflow.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the fan behind the rear panel will start without warning if power is restored while your hand is in there. Leave every door switch wired as it is.
When to call a technician
Call once the checks above come back clean, and call immediately if the fault is on the sealed system. Refrigerant work is licensed work. Two signs put you there straight away: a compressor that hums for a second and cuts out, and oil or an oily film anywhere around the compressor or the tubing.
