The short answer
On Finlux a dryer that will not start is most often a door not closing onto its switch, not a failed motor. Ranked that way because its condenser-style drying stack puts the heater, the thermostat and the lint path in series, so a restriction shows up as a control complaint first.
What you observe
- It hums but the drum does not turn — Half a supply, or a mechanical jam. Stop and investigate rather than retrying.
- It beeps once and refuses every button — Usually a child lock or a delayed start.
- NEAR MISS: the drum turns but there is no heat — That is a heating fault rather than a starting fault, and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on Finlux
- The door is not closing onto its switch — First here, because this platform interprets little and shows the fault almost directly. Every dryer refuses to run with the door open, and the switch that proves it closed is pressed thousands of times. A worn striker or a door that no longer sits square gives a completely dead machine with a healthy control.
- A child lock or a delayed start is set — Second, and the cause that most often looks like something worse. Both survive a power cut and both look exactly like a refusal to run. A key symbol, a clock symbol, or a machine that beeps once and does nothing are this cause rather than a fault.
- Part or all of the supply is missing — Third. A dryer that is completely dead has lost its supply; one that hums without turning has lost half of it.
- The motor, the start switch or the control has failed — Last, and it is the reason the order above matters. Supply is confirmed, the door closes onto its switch, a programme is selected and nothing happens.
Check in this order, and why
- Push the door firmly shut and listen for the switch to click — It is the most common reason a healthy dryer does nothing, so it goes first.
- Read the panel for a key or clock symbol before pressing anything else — Free to rule out, and it explains a machine that beeps and does nothing.
- Look at the panel and listen: dark and silent is supply, lit is not — One observation splits the whole list in two, which is why it comes so early.
What an owner can safely check
- Close the door firmly and listen for the switch, then check the striker and hinge — A door that has to be held to start is telling you the switch is marginal.
About 10 min
- Clear any control lock and cancel any delayed start, then reselect the programme — Holding the lock key for a few seconds is the usual clear.
About 5 min
- Switch the breaker fully off and on, and check the plug is fully home — A breaker that trips again straight away is a fault.
Tools: torchAbout 15 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching behind it. Never reset a breaker a second time once it has tripped twice. If you smell gas at a gas dryer, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the supply is confirmed, the door switch clicks, a programme is selected, the vent is clear and the machine still does nothing, because that puts the fault in a fuse, the motor or the control. Call immediately if it trips the breaker on restoring power, if it hums without turning, or if anything smells hot.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the brand and the dryer class, not one family or model line. Where a family-specific or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and it takes precedence over this one. Not here: part numbers, wiring colours and component locations, which differ by family.
