The short version
A refrigerator that hums along without getting cold is almost never a refrigerator that has stopped making cold. It is a refrigerator that has stopped moving it, and the difference decides whether this is a twenty-minute job or a sealed-system visit. On a Faberware refrigerator the place to start is the evaporator fan, because housewares-brand cabinets are built to a price on the trim and the door hardware, so the gasket and the door hinge are the parts that leave tolerance first.
What the machine is doing
- The unit never cycles off — It runs continuously without ever satisfying its thermostat, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- The cabinet is warm while the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor and feel warmth at the back, but the air inside is room temperature or close to it.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer back wall — Not the usual light dusting that comes and goes, but a solid pane you can scrape with a fingernail.
- NEAR MISS: the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a power, start-relay or compressor fault and it belongs on a different page.
The causes, ranked for this brand
- A failed or obstructed evaporator fan — The fan behind the freezer rear panel is what carries cold into the fresh-food compartment. Ranked first on a Faberware refrigerator: this is housewares-brand equipment built to a price on its hardware, so the consumable and wear parts set the failure profile rather than the control electronics.
- A frosted-over evaporator blocking the air path — Defrost stalls, ice builds on the evaporator fins over a few weeks, and the fan can no longer push air through the pack. Where it sits here: this is the cause that hides longest, because the machine sounds perfectly healthy the whole time it is failing.
- A door that is not sealing, or is being held open by its contents — A gasket that has taken a set, a hinge that has dropped, or a bottle stacked against the inner liner all leave a gap. Where it sits here: worth checking early because it is free, and because it causes the frost fault above rather than merely resembling it.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — A leak, a restriction or a compressor that is turning without pumping produces exactly this symptom, and none of it is owner-serviceable. Where it sits here: least common of the set and the only one that is a service call from the first minute, which is precisely why it is checked last.
What to check first, and why that order
- Start at the evaporator fan — It is the cause that ranks first on this kind of machine, so it is the check that ends the diagnosis most often and the one that costs least to make.
- Open the freezer and listen for the fan — It splits the two likeliest causes apart before any tool comes out: fan running plus warm cabinet means airflow is blocked, fan silent means the fan itself.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — Confirms the defrost cause when the fan is turning, and tells you the cabinet has been failing for weeks rather than hours.
The checks you can make yourself
- Vacuum the condenser coil at the back or underneath — A dust blanket on the coil produces exactly this symptom and nothing else.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 20 min
- Clean the gasket and reseat it — Warm soapy water on the gasket and the liner it lands on, then dry both.
Tools: cloth, mild detergentAbout 15 min
- STOP HERE if the next step means a meter on live terminals — Fan motor windings, defrost heaters and thermistors are all measured live or on a disassembled harness.
Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not chip ice off an evaporator with a screwdriver or a knife, because the aluminium tubing behind it is thin and a puncture turns a cheap repair into a sealed-system replacement. Leave the door switch wired as it is: it cuts the fan for a reason.
Where the owner job ends
Call once the airflow checks are clean and the cabinet still will not pull down, and call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or smell anything burning. Refrigerant work is licensed work, and the gauges and recovery equipment it needs are not owner tools.

What is deliberately not here
This page covers Faberware refrigerators as a class, not one family or model line. Deliberately not here: wiring colours, the defrost board part number and the thermistor resistance table, all of which differ by family.
