The short answer
A compact refrigerator is a cycling machine with a light cabinet, so the start and stop transitions are the loudest thing it does: a thermostat or relay click, a knock as the compressor takes up its mounts, then a hum. Matching each sound to the moment it happens tells you within one cycle whether you have a fault or a rhythm.
What you observe
- A click, then a knock, then a hum — The normal start sequence: control, compressor take-up, running.
- A click every few minutes with no hum after it — A compressor that is not starting. That is a cooling fault, not a noise one.
- Gurgling and ticking after the hum stops — Refrigerant settling and the cabinet contracting. Normal.
- A rattle only while the compressor runs — Something loose vibrating in sympathy — shelves, trays or the cabinet on its stand.
- NEAR MISS — a metallic scrape or grind — Scraping is never part of the cycle and is the one sound worth acting on quickly.
Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- Normal start and stop transitions in a light cabinet — First, because a compact cabinet has little mass to absorb the moment the compressor takes up load. The same click and knock in a heavy full-size fridge is inaudible; here it carries through the shell. This is the commonest reported noise and it is not a fault.
- The cabinet not level, or on a resonant surface — Second. A cabinet that rocks slightly turns each start transition into a knock you can hear in the next room, and a hollow stand amplifies the hum that follows.
- Loose shelves, trays and stored items — Third. Anything free to move rattles only while the compressor runs, which makes it look like a mechanical fault until you empty the cabinet.
- A genuine mechanical fault — Last by frequency. A scrape, a grind or a rising whine that survives an empty, level cabinet is the machine itself and belongs with a technician.
Check in this order, and why
- Sit through one full cycle and map each sound to a moment — First, because it reclassifies most complaints as normal at no cost.
- Empty the cabinet and remove the shelves — Second: contents are the commonest false lead.
- Level the cabinet until it does not rock at all — Next, because rocking converts every start into a knock.
- Move it off any hollow stand and onto a mat — Last; it changes loudness rather than revealing a fault.

- Note when each sound happens relative to the hum — Before it, during it, or after it — each means something different.

Before you open or move it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never pull or bend refrigerant tubing to stop it touching; the lines are thin and a kink ends the cabinet. Empty the fridge before you move it, and if it has been tilted, stand it upright and leave it before switching on.
When to call a technician
Call when a scrape, grind or rising whine continues with the cabinet empty, level and clear of walls. Call when a click repeats every few minutes with no hum following it, which is a compressor failing to start rather than a noise problem. Call at once if the cabinet trips its protective device. On a compact cabinet, compare any quote against replacement before agreeing.
