Safety
Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before opening the pump filter or removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix cleaning products: chlorine bleach and an acidic descaler together produce chlorine gas, and a laundry room is exactly the wrong place for it. Wear gloves when clearing a bellows fold.
Where the owner work ends
Call a technician when the smell survives a full clean, a hot maintenance wash and a change of routine — at that point the sump, the drain hose or an internal hose is holding the reservoir. Call a plumber rather than an appliance technician if the smell is sewer-like and other drains in the house smell too.
