The short version
A refrigerator that hums along without getting cold is almost never a refrigerator that has stopped making cold. It is a refrigerator that has stopped moving it, and the difference decides whether this is a twenty-minute job or a sealed-system visit. On an Everchill refrigerator the place to start is the condenser coil and the clearance around it, because a coach refrigerator lives with an unlevel floor, a ventilated outside wall and a supply that sags, so how and where it is installed outranks every component on the list.
What the machine is doing
- The fresh-food side is warm while the freezer is still hard — The classic split: cold is being made, and none of it is reaching the upper cabinet.
- The unit never cycles off — It runs continuously without ever satisfying its thermostat, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- The cabinet is warm while the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor and feel warmth at the back, but the air inside is room temperature or close to it.
- NEAR MISS: the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a power, start-relay or compressor fault and it belongs on a different page.
The causes, ranked for this brand
- A choked condenser coil or no clearance to reject heat — The condenser has to dump heat into the room. Ranked first on an Everchill refrigerator: this is coach equipment that lives with an unlevel floor and a supply that sags under load, so what feeds the unit outranks everything inside it.
- A frosted-over evaporator blocking the air path — Defrost stalls, ice builds on the evaporator fins over a few weeks, and the fan can no longer push air through the pack. Where it sits here: this is the cause that hides longest, because the machine sounds perfectly healthy the whole time it is failing.
- A failed or obstructed evaporator fan — The fan behind the freezer rear panel is what carries cold into the fresh-food compartment. Where it sits here: it is a wear part with a bearing and a duty cycle, so it is always a live candidate on an older cabinet.
- A door that is not sealing, or is being held open by its contents — A gasket that has taken a set, a hinge that has dropped, or a bottle stacked against the inner liner all leave a gap. Where it sits here: worth checking early because it is free, and because it causes the frost fault above rather than merely resembling it.
What to check first, and why that order
- Start at the condenser coil and the clearance around it — It is the cause that ranks first on this kind of machine, so it is the check that ends the diagnosis most often and the one that costs least to make.
- Open the freezer and listen for the fan — It splits the two likeliest causes apart before any tool comes out: fan running plus warm cabinet means airflow is blocked, fan silent means the fan itself.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — Confirms the defrost cause when the fan is turning, and tells you the cabinet has been failing for weeks rather than hours.
The checks you can make yourself
- Vacuum the condenser coil at the back or underneath — A dust blanket on the coil produces exactly this symptom and nothing else.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 20 min
- Clean the gasket and reseat it — Warm soapy water on the gasket and the liner it lands on, then dry both.
Tools: cloth, mild detergentAbout 15 min
- STOP HERE if the next step means a meter on live terminals — Fan motor windings, defrost heaters and thermistors are all measured live or on a disassembled harness.
Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not chip ice off an evaporator with a screwdriver or a knife, because the aluminium tubing behind it is thin and a puncture turns a cheap repair into a sealed-system replacement. Leave the door switch wired as it is: it cuts the fan for a reason.
Where the owner job ends
Call once the airflow checks are clean and the cabinet still will not pull down, and call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or smell anything burning. Refrigerant work is licensed work, and the gauges and recovery equipment it needs are not owner tools.

What is deliberately not here
This page covers Everchill refrigerators as a class, not one family or model line. Deliberately not here: wiring colours, the defrost board part number and the thermistor resistance table, all of which differ by family.
