The answer first
Most of the time on a EverChill refrigerator this comes down to one of two findings: blocked or iced airflow across the evaporator, or insufficient clearance or a blocked ventilation path. A cabinet that still runs but no longer holds its set point is almost never a dead compressor — it is an airflow, door or siting problem that has quietly removed the machine's margin.
What the owner actually sees
- A sheet of frost on the back wall behind the shelves or baskets — Ice on the evaporator surface itself, rather than the light dusting a defrost cycle leaves behind.
- It cools on shore power and struggles on battery, or after a day of travel — The supply and the vibration are unique to an RV installation and they produce faults a domestic cabinet never sees.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing at all is cold — That is a no-power, start-relay or control fault, and it belongs on the will-not-start page rather than this one.
Causes, most likely first
- Blocked or iced airflow across the evaporator — Ranked first on a EverChill refrigerator because the rear vent stack is the whole cooling path on an RV install, and it collects dust, nests and stored gear. Frost bridges the evaporator fins or a vent is obstructed, so cold is made but not delivered.
- Insufficient clearance or a blocked ventilation path — Second here: a cabinet that is bolted into a moving vehicle loses screws, shifts on its mounts and ends up off level in a way no kitchen appliance does.
- A door that is not sealing, closing or latching properly — A gasket that has taken a set, a shelf holding the door open by a fraction, or a hinge that has dropped will load the cabinet with warm humid air continuously.
The order to work in
- First: Look at the rear wall or the freezer back panel for a solid frost sheet, and listen for the evaporator fan when the door switch is held in. — It sits first because the rear vent stack is the whole cooling path on an RV install, and it collects dust, nests and stored gear.
- Second: Look for a clear air path behind, above and below the cabinet, and check whether anything is stored hard against it. — Next, and it needs no tool.
- Third: Close the door on a slip of paper at several points around the frame and try to pull it out. — Only once the checks above are clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Check the coach supply and the vent stack before anything inside the cabinet — Battery voltage under load, the inverter, the DC connections and the rear vent path account for most RV refrigeration complaints, and all four are checked without opening the cabinet.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never puncture, cut or heat any tube on the sealed system: the refrigerant inside is under pressure, and both the recovery and the recharge are licensed work. Keep the door interlock and door switch wired as they are; they cut the internal fan for a reason.
When this becomes a service call
Call a technician once the vents are clear, the door seals, the condenser is clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining candidates are a fan motor, a control or the sealed system, and only the first of those is quick. Call immediately if the compressor is hot to the touch and cycling every few moments, if you can see oil around the tubing, or if a breaker trips when the unit starts.
