The short answer
A refrigerator that hums along without getting cold is almost never a refrigerator that has stopped making cold. It is a refrigerator that has stopped moving it, and the difference decides whether this is a twenty-minute job or a sealed-system visit. On a EuroCave refrigerator the place to start is the condenser coil and the clearance around it, because a wine cabinet runs a narrow band with an active humidity target, so the seal and the sensing chain rank far above anything that would rank first in a food refrigerator.
What you actually observe
- The fresh-food side is warm while the freezer is still hard — The classic split: cold is being made, and none of it is reaching the upper cabinet.
- The unit never cycles off — It runs continuously without ever satisfying its thermostat, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- The cabinet is warm while the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor and feel warmth at the back, but the air inside is room temperature or close to it.
- NEAR MISS: the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a power, start-relay or compressor fault and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A choked condenser coil or no clearance to reject heat — The condenser has to dump heat into the room. Ranked first on a EuroCave refrigerator: this is cabinet equipment built to hold a narrow band with an active humidity target, so anything that changes the air it is standing in outranks every part inside it.
- A frosted-over evaporator blocking the air path — Defrost stalls, ice builds on the evaporator fins over a few weeks, and the fan can no longer push air through the pack. Where it sits here: this is the cause that hides longest, because the machine sounds perfectly healthy the whole time it is failing.
- A sensing or control fault telling the machine it is already cold — A thermistor reading low, a defrost timer that never advances, or a control that has lost its schedule will all stop the cooling cycle from doing its job. Where it sits here: hard for an owner to confirm without a meter, so it belongs below the checks you can make with your hands.
- A door that is not sealing, or is being held open by its contents — A gasket that has taken a set, a hinge that has dropped, or a bottle stacked against the inner liner all leave a gap. Where it sits here: worth checking early because it is free, and because it causes the frost fault above rather than merely resembling it.
Check in this order, and why
- Start at the condenser coil and the clearance around it — It is the cause that ranks first on this kind of machine, so it is the check that ends the diagnosis most often and the one that costs least to make.
- Open the freezer and listen for the fan — It splits the two likeliest causes apart before any tool comes out: fan running plus warm cabinet means airflow is blocked, fan silent means the fan itself.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — Confirms the defrost cause when the fan is turning, and tells you the cabinet has been failing for weeks rather than hours.
What an owner can safely do
- Empty the cabinet and let it stand with the doors open — A full manual defrost is the single most informative test an owner can run.
About 90 min
- STOP HERE if the next step means a meter on live terminals — Fan motor windings, defrost heaters and thermistors are all measured live or on a disassembled harness.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not chip ice off an evaporator with a screwdriver or a knife, because the aluminium tubing behind it is thin and a puncture turns a cheap repair into a sealed-system replacement. Leave the door switch wired as it is: it cuts the fan for a reason.
When to call a technician
Call once the airflow checks are clean and the cabinet still will not pull down, and call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or smell anything burning. Refrigerant work is licensed work, and the gauges and recovery equipment it needs are not owner tools.

What this page does not cover
This page covers EuroCave refrigerators as a class, not one family or model line. Deliberately not here: wiring colours, the defrost board part number and the thermistor resistance table, all of which differ by family.
