An Equator machine that trips its protection, warms its own plug or gives a tingle when touched has crossed out of diagnosis and into isolation: switch it off at the breaker and leave it off. The ranked causes below exist to tell you who to call rather than what to buy, because every one of them is measured on live terminals in a wet machine.
What you are seeing
- A burning, fishy or hot-plastic smell during the cycle — Overheated insulation smells like hot plastic or fish, and it does not go away on its own.
- The panel behaves oddly and the machine trips intermittently — Intermittent electrical faults are more dangerous than constant ones, because they get tolerated.
- The breaker or the residual-current device trips when the machine runs — Often at a specific point in the cycle, which is itself a clue.
- A warm, discoloured or smelling plug, or scorch marks at the outlet — Heat at a connection means resistance, and resistance at mains current means a fire risk.
- NEAR MISS: a hot smell from a new machine on its first cycles — A new heater can smell of warm manufacturing residue briefly.
What is usually behind it, in order
- Water reaching wiring, the cord entry or a junction — The leading cause here: a slow leak wets a connection and the machine starts tripping, which looks like an electrical failure because it is one.
- Plug, outlet or cord connection overheating — Second most likely here: this badge builds ventless combination machines, and a cord routed by the household behind a pushed-back cabinet is the likeliest place for a damaged connection.
- Heating element breaking down to earth — Third in order: an element whose insulation has failed leaks current to earth when it is energised, which is why the trip arrives at the same point in every cycle.
- Board or suppression component failing — Fourth, and less common: it is less common than the heater and the pump.
What to test first, second, third
- Check for any sign of a leak at the base or under the cabinet — If the machine trips and the base is wet, the two facts are the same fault and it needs attention before anything is reconnected.
- With the power off, look at the plug, the outlet and the visible cord — Discolouration, a smell of hot plastic, or a cord flattened by the cabinet are all reasons to stop using the machine immediately.
- Note when in the cycle it trips, to the minute if you can — A trip that always arrives at the heat phase is the single most useful thing you can tell a technician.
- Do not open the machine to look — A board that has failed this way may look perfect and is still live.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- Switch the machine off at the breaker and unplug it if the plug is accessible and cool — Isolation first: there is no diagnosis worth doing on a live machine with these symptoms.

- Check the visible cord for flattening, cuts or scorching — A cord damaged by the cabinet is a replacement, never a tape-and-hope.
