The short answer
When an Engindot washer will not start, the usual cause is no supply at the socket, or a tripped breaker, with a door or lid that is not making its interlock next. It is a twin-tub style machine where washing and spinning happen in separate chambers, which is what puts those two ahead of the rest. Every check in the first half of this list is an owner check and none of them needs a tool.
What you actually observe
- The display is dead and nothing lights at all — No lights at all is a supply question before it is a machine question.
- The machine lights up but nothing happens when you press start — Power is arriving and something in the safety chain is refusing, which is usually the door.
- NEAR MISS: it starts and then stops part way through — That is the mid-cycle page and it has a different set of causes.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- No supply at the socket, or a tripped breaker — A washer draws hard and it shares its circuit with whatever else is in the room. A tripped breaker, a dead socket or an extension lead that has given up accounts for most dead machines. Ranked first on an Engindot washer: a machine that is plugged in for the wash and unplugged afterwards has the most-worn plug and socket of any format.
- A door or lid that is not making its interlock — No washer will start with the door circuit open. Ranked second on an Engindot washer: the interlock is a safety device and it fails closed by design.
- Taps closed, so the machine waits and never starts — Many machines will light up, accept a programme and then sit there waiting for water that is not coming. Ranked third on an Engindot washer: a machine filled from a tap hose does nothing at all until that hose is connected and open.
- A control lock, a delay timer or a paused programme — Child locks, delay starts and pause states all leave a machine lit but inert. Ranked fourth on an Engindot washer: it costs nothing to rule out and it is right more often than anyone likes to admit.
Check in this order, and why this order
- Plug something you know works into the same socket — It is the first check because it separates the machine from the building in under a minute.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the latch, then press start again — A machine that starts when the door is pressed home has told you the answer with no tools at all.
- Check both taps are fully open and listen for water arriving after start — A faint trickle, or silence, tells you immediately which side of this the fault is on.
What an owner can safely check
- Reset the breaker, plug the machine straight into a wall socket and try again — Take out every extension lead and adapter for the test.

- Clean the latch and the strike plate, and check nothing is caught in the seal — A trapped sock at the latch does this repeatedly and looks like an electrical fault.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before reaching into a drum, a pump housing or behind a panel: the drum and the pump impeller can both turn under power. Never defeat a lid or door interlock to watch the drum move. A washer is heavy and holds water, so get help to move it and shut the taps off first.
When to call a technician
Call once the socket, the door, the taps, the controls and the drum are all clean and the machine still does nothing, because what is left is a switch, the wiring or the board and all three mean a panel off. Call immediately if the machine trips the breaker the moment it is plugged in, or if you can smell anything hot: a machine that trips its supply should stay off.
