The short answer
When an Empava appliance puts up a code, treat it as a pointer, not a verdict. Codes point at a subsystem: fill, drain, heat, door, leak detection. Clearing a code without addressing the condition brings it back the same day. The ranking below is ordered for how these panels actually fail, with the cheap and reversible causes first.
What the machine is telling you
- Touch keys respond sometimes, or respond to the wrong place — Moisture behind a membrane or a failing touch layer, typical in a steamy cabinet.
- Buttons do nothing, but the display is lit — Control lock, a latched fault or a failed touch panel.
- The code clears after a power cut and returns within a cycle — The condition is still present; the reset cleared the message only.
- The display shows nothing but the machine still runs — A display fault rather than a control fault, and the machine may be perfectly serviceable.
- NEAR MISS: a lock symbol you can clear with a long press — Control lock is a setting.
Causes, most likely first
- A latched fault the board is holding — First, and by a clear margin: boards latch a fault and keep showing it after the condition clears, so the machine appears broken when the real event has passed.
- Moisture or steam reaching the panel or its connector — Second: it ranks above hardware failure because it is reversible: dried out and reseated, the same panel often behaves for years.
- Control lock, demo mode or a mis-set option — Third: it is free, reversible and accounts for a large share of dead panels: a lock engaged by a long press looks exactly like a failed touch layer.
The order of checks, and why
- Power down fully for a few minutes, then run a short cycle — A code that returns during that cycle is a live condition; one that does not was a latch.
- Note whether the panel misbehaves only when the machine is hot — Faults that appear at the end of a cycle and clear when cold are moisture, not electronics.
- Look for a lock or key symbol and long-press the lock button — If the buttons come back, the panel was never faulty and nothing needs ordering.

Where the owner fix ends
Call once a lock is ruled out, one full reset has not held, the filter and drain path are clear and the door latches properly. What is left needs the fascia off and the code read against the service data for your build, which is neither visible nor safe from the kitchen.
