The short answer
Check whether other machines or sockets nearby have power. Then look for a protected outlet reset, sometimes in another room, before the breaker panel. On a household machine in a flat, the door lock and a delay timer remain the commonest non-supply causes.
What you find
- Dead machine with every breaker closed — A protected outlet has tripped.
- Every machine in the laundry dead — The room supply or a master switch.
- Only this machine dead — Its own outlet, plug or cord.
- Display on, nothing happening — Door lock, control lock or a delay.
- Power lost when something else was switched on — A shared circuit tripping.
- Not this fault: a machine that stalls mid-cycle — Read the cycle page.
Ranked for apartment and shared installations
- Protected outlet tripped with a remote reset — First in a flat.
- Shared circuit overloaded — Second.
- Door lock not confirming — Third.
- Delay timer or control lock set — Fourth.
- Payment or master control in a communal laundry — Fifth.
- Board or supply component failed — Last.
Work through it in this order
- Check whether neighbouring sockets and machines have power — It scopes the problem in seconds.
- Find and press every protected outlet reset nearby — Including in adjacent rooms.
- Reset the breaker fully off and on — Half-tripped breakers look closed.
- Then check the door, the delay and the lock — The usual appliance-side trio.
Owner checks
- Test a nearby socket with a lamp or a charger — It separates the room from the machine.
About 10 min
- Press every protected outlet reset in the area — The reset is often not on the outlet in use.
About 20 min
- Switch the breaker fully off and back on — Do it decisively rather than nudging it.
About 10 min
- Close the door until the lock confirms and cancel any delay — The usual appliance-side causes.
About 10 min
- Report a communal laundry machine rather than investigating further — The operator holds the supply arrangement.
About 10 min
- Stop before opening the cabinet, especially on a machine you do not own — Water and mains wiring share that space.
Flats, shared supplies and water
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never operate a machine while standing in water, never run a washer from an extension lead, and treat a protected outlet that will not hold as a fault for an electrician rather than something to keep resetting.
When to call
Call an electrician when a protected outlet will not reset or a circuit trips repeatedly. Report a communal machine to the laundry operator or the building. Call an appliance technician only once the supply is proven and the door, delay and lock checks are done. In a rented flat, the landlord arranges the repair.
