The short answer
Clean the door seal fold, the detergent drawer and the pump filter, then run a hot maintenance wash with the drum empty. Afterwards leave the door and the drawer open between washes and cut back the softener. The smell returns if the routine stops.
What you notice
- A musty smell when the door is opened — Biofilm in the seal or the sump.
- Clean laundry smelling stale once dry — Residue transferring to fabric.
- Dark marks in the door seal fold — Growth you can see.
- A slimy film in the detergent drawer — Softener and detergent residue.
- Smell worst after low-temperature washes — The characteristic pattern.
- Not this fault: a burning or hot smell — Read the electrical-hazard page.
Ranked by where it grows
- Door seal fold holding water and residue — First on front-loading machines.
- Detergent drawer and its housing — Second.
- Pump filter and sump — Third.
- Cool washing that never clears residue — The condition behind all three.
- Over-dosing detergent and softener — Fifth, and it feeds the film.
- Drain hose or standpipe odour entering the machine — Last, and it smells of drains rather than must.
Clean it in this order
- Wipe out the whole door seal fold — This is where most of it lives.
- Remove and wash the drawer and scrub its housing — The housing is dirtier than the drawer.
- Open and clean the pump filter — It collects everything the drum sheds.
- Run a hot maintenance wash with the drum empty — Only after the cleaning, not instead of it.
Owner routine
- Pull the door seal fold open and wipe all the way round — Do this weekly on a front-loading machine.
Tools: cloth, glovesAbout 15 min
- Take out the detergent drawer and scrub the housing behind it — Use a brush; the film clings.
Tools: brushAbout 25 min
- Clean the pump filter over a shallow tray — It is usually where the smell is strongest.
Tools: shallow tray, towelsAbout 25 min
- Run the hottest available maintenance program with nothing in the drum — Monthly is a reasonable rhythm.
- Leave the door and drawer ajar between washes — It is the single most effective preventive step.
About 5 min
- Stop before opening the cabinet to reach the sump or bellows — Water and mains wiring share that space.
Cleaning products and mains appliances
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix cleaning products in the drum - bleach and other cleaners together produce hazardous gas. Ventilate the room while cleaning, wear gloves, and keep products away from children and pets.
When to call
Call when the seal, the drawer and the filter are genuinely clean, hot maintenance washes have been run, and the smell persists - that suggests the sump, the bellows or a drain arrangement letting odour back into the machine. A seal that is perished rather than dirty also needs replacing, and that is a technician job on most machines.
