The short answer
On an Electrolux washer the usual reason water stays in the drum is a pump filter full of lint, coins and hair, with a drain hose kinked, trapped or looped too high next. It is a full-size unit from a global maker, with the electronic controls and sealed drive that go with that, which decides where the blockage forms first.
What you actually observe
- Water standing in the drum at the end of the cycle — The plain version of this fault, and it means the pump never won.
- The pump runs but nothing leaves — A pump you can hear working with no water moving is a blockage, not a dead pump.
- NEAR MISS: water is on the floor rather than in the drum — That is the leak page.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A pump filter full of lint, coins and hair — The filter behind the front plinth catches everything that leaves a pocket. Once it is packed the pump cannot move water past it, and it is the single most common cause of this fault on any machine that has one. Ranked first on an Electrolux washer: a front-loading machine puts its filter directly ahead of the pump, where it takes everything before the pump sees it.
- A drain hose kinked, trapped or looped too high — The drain hose has to rise to the standpipe and then fall. Ranked second on an Electrolux washer: the hose is the part of the drain path that gets moved, and moving it is what kinks it.
- A blocked standpipe or sink trap taking the water — The blockage is often outside the machine altogether. Ranked third on an Electrolux washer: the machine can only push water as fast as the waste will take it.
- A drain pump that has failed outright — A pump that makes no sound at all during the drain, with a clean filter and a clear hose, has either lost its supply or lost its motor. Ranked fourth on an Electrolux washer: a machine that drains several times per cycle asks a great deal of one small pump.
Check in this order, and why this order
- Open the pump filter behind the front plinth — It is the first check because it is the most likely and the easiest, and it needs no tools at all.
- Pull the machine forward and follow the drain hose from the machine to the standpipe — A kink or a high loop is visible without touching anything, and it explains a slow drain as readily as no drain.
- Pour a bucket of water down the standpipe or sink the machine drains into — If that backs up on its own, the machine was never the problem.
What an owner can safely check
- Drain into a shallow tray through the filter cap, then clear the filter housing — Expect several litres and have towels down.

- Free the hose, give it a gentle fall to the standpipe and re-seat the end — Do not push the hose further into the standpipe than the manufacturer marks.

- Clear the standpipe or sink trap and run the water again to confirm — Do this before opening the machine if the sink is slow too.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before reaching into a drum, a pump housing or behind a panel: the drum and the pump impeller can both turn under power. Never defeat a lid or door interlock to watch the drum move. A washer is heavy and holds water, so get help to move it and shut the taps off first.
When to call a technician
Call once the filter, the hose, the standpipe and the impeller are all clean and water still stays in the drum, because what is left is the pump or its wiring and that means the machine on its side or its panel off. Call sooner if the machine trips its breaker when the pump should run, or if you can smell anything hot at the drain stage.
