The short answer
On an Electrolux cabinet the first suspect is the defrost drain: it blocks or freezes, and melt water backs up under the crispers or runs out along the door seal. The water filter head is second and is the cause whenever the leak began just after a filter change. Both are owner-checkable. Only a weeping inlet valve, which is behind the cabinet, is a service call.
What you observe
- Water under the crisper drawers, returning every day or two — Cyclic timing is the defrost drain's signature.
- Layered ice on the floor of the freezer — The drain is frozen, not just clogged.
- A steady drip near the filter housing — Supply-side, and it does not follow the defrost cycle.
- Water running out of the door when it is opened — The trough has filled far enough to reach the door line.
- NEAR MISS — droplets on the walls and shelves only — Condensation from a door left ajar or a tired gasket, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Defrost drain blocked or frozen at the trough — First on this platform because the drain outlet sits in the coldest part of the air path, so any food debris in it seeds an ice plug that each defrost cycle then grows rather than clears.
- Water filter head o-ring or a cartridge not fully seated — Second, and identified by timing alone: it begins within days of a filter change and drips steadily rather than in cycles.
- Ice maker fill tube frosted at its mouth — Third. Each fill sprays past the frozen mouth and down the rear wall, which is why the water looks like it comes from the cabinet itself.
- Inlet valve or supply joint weeping behind the cabinet — Last, and the reason for the order: it is the least common here and the only one that needs the cabinet moved and the supply shut off.
Check in this order, and why
- Ask whether the water returns on a cycle or drips continuously — One question that splits the whole list in half.
- Empty the drawers and look at the trough and drain hole — Confirms the likeliest cause without tools.
- Reseat the water filter and check the old o-ring came out — Free, and it is decisive when the timing matches.
- Switch the ice maker off for a day — Isolates the ice system last, because it is the rarer of the two supply causes.
What an owner can safely check
- Dry the compartment completely and note the time — A clean baseline tells you whether the return is cyclic or steady.
Tools: clothAbout 10 min
- Pour warm water slowly into the drain hole at the rear — It should run away freely. Backing up confirms the drain.
Tools: jug of warm waterAbout 15 min
- Remove and refit the water filter firmly — Make sure the old o-ring left with the old cartridge.
About 5 min
- Switch the ice maker off and leave it a day — If the water stops, the fill tube or mould is the source.
About 5 min
- STOP HERE if the cabinet has to be moved to reach a joint — Supply-side work behind the cabinet is a service call.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the water shut-off valve before touching the filter head or any supply joint. Never clear a frozen drain with a screwdriver, a wire or a heat gun — the liner punctures and melts easily, and behind it is foam insulation and tubing. Dry the floor before restoring power, and take care on a wet floor beside a plugged-in appliance.
When to call a technician
Call once the drain runs freely, the filter is seated, the ice maker has been isolated, and water still appears — the remaining candidates are behind the cabinet. Call sooner if water is reaching a wooden floor or a downstairs ceiling. Call immediately, instead of continuing, if the drain will not clear with warm water: repeated attempts push debris further in and a frozen drain usually means the defrost system needs looking at anyway.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: drain and valve part identifiers, filter cartridge references, supply fitting sizes and service-mode sequences, all of which differ between the side-by-side, French-door and top-freezer families.
