The short answer
An EdgeStar dishwasher that will not drain is usually blocked rather than broken, and the blockage is nearly always in the first arm’s length of the path. Bail the water out first, then work the ranking below in order, because the last cause is the only one that needs a technician.
What you are seeing and hearing
- Standing water covering the bottom of the tub at the end of a cycle — The classic presentation, and it says nothing yet about where.
- The whole unit is affected at once rather than one part of it — A compact machine has one small circuit, so nothing here fails by halves.

What it usually turns out to be, ranked
- A new waste disposer with its knockout plug still in place — Where a machine drains through a food waste disposer, a plug left in the disposer inlet blocks the path completely. - The filter and sump packed with debris — The filter sits directly above the drain path, and once it has matted over with food waste and paper labels the pump cannot pull water through it. What to check first, second and third
- Check whether the machine has ever drained properly since it was fitted — Never having worked points at installation rather than at wear.
- Bail the standing water out and lift the filter assembly clear — A visible mat of debris under the filter settles it immediately.
- Pull the machine forward carefully and follow the hose to where it connects — A visible kink or a hose trapped behind a foot is a complete answer.

- Check the disposer inlet for an un-removed plug and clear the air gap if the installation has one — This is the classic new-installation fault and it takes minutes.

Before you touch anything
Safety
Switch off the breaker before removing the lower panel or the door skin: the heating element and the junction box are both live under the machine, and there is standing water in the sump. Never defeat the door latch to watch a cycle run. Let a hot machine cool before you reach into it.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter, sump, hose and waste connection are all clear and the water still sits, because what is left is the pump or the control and both mean the machine coming out. Call sooner if the machine hums at the drain step with nothing moving, since a jammed impeller left running damages the pump.
