A short cycle is usually a thermal trip
A shared-laundry dryer that stops partway through is usually protecting itself against restricted airflow. The thermal cut-out is the most common single reason a cycle ends early on this equipment, and it points straight back at the lint screen and the duct rather than at the timer.
What you are seeing
- The cycle stops well before the time shown.
- The machine stops at roughly the same point on every load.
- It will not restart until it has stood for a while.
- A moisture-sensing cycle ends almost immediately.
- The machine stops and the drum is very hot.
- Not this fault: A machine that never starts at all is a start fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: A full cycle that leaves the load damp is a drying fault, not a cycle fault.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Thermal cut-out opening because airflow is restricted — Why ranked: First on this equipment. A repeatable stop after a similar elapsed time, with a hot drum, is the signature.
- Lint screen and duct loaded — Why ranked: Second, and the reason behind the first: the restriction is what makes the machine overheat in the first place.
- Moisture sensor reading a dry load because of a small or synthetic load — Why ranked: Third. A sensing cycle can end almost immediately on a light load, which looks like a fault and is not.
- Door easing open under vibration — Why ranked: Fourth: a worn catch drops the interlock and ends the cycle, and the machine restarts immediately with no cool-down.
- Timer or control fault — Why ranked: Last, and separated from everything above by not caring whether the machine is hot.
What to check, in order
- Note the elapsed time at which the cycle stops, over two loads. — Because: A repeatable elapsed time with a hot drum is a thermal trip rather than a control fault.
- Try to restart immediately after the stop. — Because: A refusal while hot and a start when cool is thermal; an immediate restart points at the door or the control.
- Clean the lint screen and repeat the same load. — Because: This tests the restriction directly and costs nothing.
- Check whether the cycle selected is time-based or moisture-sensing. — Because: A sensing cycle on a small synthetic load ends quickly by design.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A thermal cut-out tripping repeatedly is a warning about airflow and a fire risk - it must never be defeated or bypassed to keep a machine in service. Never run a dryer without its lint screen. Do not remove or bridge a thermal cut-out. Report a scorched smell immediately and stop using the machine.
When this becomes a service call
The machine trips repeatedly with a clean screen and a light load. The cycle ends immediately on every setting. There is a scorched or burning smell at the stop. The machine stops and restarts at once with no cool-down, on every load.
