The short answer
Most noise from a Designer refrigerator comes from how it is standing rather than from anything failing inside it, and a good half of the complaints turn out to be normal cooling sounds heard in a quiet room. What you are seeing and hearing
- There is no model information on the unit that anyone recognises — A factory relabel often carries a number that no parts catalogue lists.
- A click every few minutes with nothing else — Relays and defrost timers click, and so does a start device.
- NEAR MISS: the noise comes with water under the unit — That is a drain or supply fault and it has its own page.
Causes in order of likelihood on this brand
- The unit is not level, or it is touching a wall or a cabinet — A refrigerator transmits every vibration it makes into whatever it touches. Ranked first on a Designer refrigerator: relabelled units are shipped and set up by whoever sold them, and installation faults are common enough here to clear first.
- A fan blade catching on frost or debris — A blade that has bent, iced up or picked up a scrap of packaging ticks or rattles. Ranked second on a Designer refrigerator: this is the cause that most often masquerades as an expensive fault.

The order to work in, and the reason for it

- Open the freezer door and listen for the noise to stop or change — A noise that stops with the door open is on the freezer fan.
- Feel the air at the back of the unit and check what it is boxed in by — A unit in its own warm air runs longer and therefore sounds constant.

Before you touch anything
Safety
Unplug the unit or switch off its breaker before removing any panel: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant work is licensed work, so never cut, bend or solder the tubing, and never run the unit with the sealed system open. A loaded refrigerator is heavy and top-sided, so get help to move it rather than walking it on a corner.
When to call a technician
Call when the unit is level, clear of the cabinets and still making a noise that rises with the compressor, because what is left is behind a panel. Call sooner if the noise is a metallic scrape or a knock at start-up, and call immediately if it comes with a burning smell.
