The short answer
On a DeChef refrigerator, why it is not holding temperature comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at an owner install into a space that was never measured for it, because these cabinets ship direct and go wherever they fit, so the clearance, the levelling and the outlet behind them are all set by the buyer rather than by an installer. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- Food in the fresh-food section is soft, milk sours early, and the cabinet feels only slightly cool to the hand.
- The freezer section still makes ice while the fresh-food section runs warm, or the opposite.
- The compressor runs continuously and never cycles off, yet the cabinet still climbs.
- The back wall inside the freezer is covered in a solid sheet of frost rather than a light dusting.
- The outside of the cabinet, particularly the sides near the back, is noticeably hot.
- The temperature recovers for a day after the door is left open to warm up, then slides back.
- Note: Near-miss symptoms that mean a different fault: If the cabinet is cold but the ice maker is empty, the fault is in the ice circuit and not in cooling — that is the ice maker page. - Pull the cabinet out and look at the condenser coil and the space around it. — Order: Second — Why: It is the highest-ranked cause, it takes no tools to see, and finding it fouled explains the symptom completely.
- Empty the freezer and look at the evaporator wall — light frost or a solid slab. — Order: Third — Why: A slab separates an airflow fault from a sealed-system fault, and those two lead to completely different repairs.
- Close the door on a strip of paper at several points around the frame and try to pull it out. — Order: Fourth — Why: It rules the seal in or out before anyone talks about refrigerant.
Steps a homeowner can take
- Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before you move it or remove any panel. — Tools: none — Time: a moment
- Pull the cabinet away from the wall, vacuum the condenser coil and the grille, and clear anything stacked against the back or on top. — Tools: vacuum with a brush nozzle, flashlight — Time: half an hour or so
- Measure the gap behind and above the cabinet against the clearance the manual asks for, and open it up if it is short. — Tools: tape measure — Time: several minutes

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never cut, bend or braze refrigerant tubing — the sealed system is closed for a reason and opening it requires certification and recovery equipment. A loaded cabinet is heavy and top-heavy on castors; walk it out, do not drag it.
When this stops being an owner job
Call once the condenser is clean, the clearance is right, the seal passes the paper test and the cabinet has been fully defrosted, and it still will not hold 40 °F (4 °C). At that point the remaining candidates are inside the sealed system or behind the evaporator, and both need a technician with gauges.
