The short answer

Safety
Switch the machine off at its breaker before reaching into the sump. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix bleach with any acid-based descaler or with vinegar in the tub — the combination produces a toxic gas. Wear gloves when handling sump debris; it contains glass as often as it contains food.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the filter, the sump, the arms and the gasket are all clean, the machine drains completely, the hose is looped high, and the smell returns anyway. What remains is usually a drain connection or a sump seal, and both are behind the base panel.
